Default Gauges layout

My first question, why does the genuine speedo go backwards. And I would like some pictures of either the genuine, or your layout. Also what was the original dash made of. I'm thinking of using either sanded aliminium, with a clear layer, or some rosewood.

heres my original dash with reverse wind speedo in rosewood its now covered in black with a new interior, i suppose the reverse wind speedo was center mounted for left hand drive

Jaydee - a wooden dash is good (and appropriate) for a Triumph TR; Cobras mostly had black leather covered dashes or black painted dashes (mainly on 289 competition variants).
What instrumentation layout are you thinking of?
A 427 body can have had originally:
1. a dropped centre street dash, with Smiths instruments incl. clock (not a common layout but nevertheless correct) in roadster layout
2. a straight bottom dash with roadster instrument layout
3. a straight bottom dash with SC layout, Smiths instruments incl. reverse winding speedo

Bottom line though, mate, is ....it's your car, build it to suit your requirements and tastes.

Thanks guys.
It'll have a drop centre dash. I think there is a fine line, between how we want the car, and how we want other people to percieve how it should be. The general public will always go wow. Enthusiasts will pick it to bits anyway, And there are a few shockers out there.
It's definitely fun to go cobra bits shopping.

I guess the original panel will make it hard to read the speedo and revs. During racing that wouldn't be as important as much as temps etc.
None of those speedos went backwards. When did that become a trend?

Jaydee each to his own. I liked the simple original look of the SC layouts with the flat dash and used ally with a rolled lower edge. All dials are easily visible. Stereo head unit is in the glove box and controlled by a wireless remote.

That looks good. Is that leather? Great idea with the stereo. I was thinking the same thing. With the ali, switches are easier to mount, than through thick wood. And if I have the dropped dash, there will be a lot of nothing to look at. Thanks again for helping out. I might use the flat dash, and have a deep tray on the tunnel, like a large glovebox.

Yes the printouts were essential in managing the location and size of the gauges. I used a hard wearing textured marine vinyl on the dash with no padding as I wanted to avoid a 'puffy' look.

My dash brackets are not as deep. With the dash mounted, where it meets the door, it sticks out.

JD if you look closer at Mike's and mine (both CR's) you can see the edges of the dash panel curve around, they are not straight. This may be difficult to do in wood.....especially wood that thick!

Ok. I missed that . The wood you see is only a template. So where the curve is, is the edge still rolled in ali?

On mine yes. The dash CR sells is fibreglass with provision for the switchgear unit moulded in to the dash panel (see Mike's pic) - I didn't want that because I'm using a different switchgear. I was lucky enough to get a "one-off" ali unit that CR had lying around the shop.

At the moment I have the original key and lock behind the dash, and I'll power feed that to a ignition switch on the dash. Regency need the steering lock. Sort of double protection as well.
I'm now searching for gauges. The Smiths cobra gauges are cheaper than VDO. All exiting stuff. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop.

Smiths are excellent for an original look. I used Classic Instruments who also have an office in. Sydney. There are many choices: Classic Instruments Gauges from egauges.com

Jaydee - Nisonger are also worth talking to for Smiths; they are in Mamaroneck, NY, but are very easy to deal with. Pricing is good.
