Bloody Australian Retail
Having a whinge.
I have been surfing the net looking for some super duper hubs and stub axles for Grover. The sand buggy/ off road racer industry are the suppliers of these products as some use VW sizing.
I found a company in the US emailed a few times to answer some questions, all good a quote given of $2250.00 delivered to my door.
By chance I stumbled across an Australian distributor for the same products, and contacted them with my request of part numbers and a qty no information needed.
This is where it all went wrong, the Australian distributor also buys from the same US supplier and spat the dummy as they should of referred them to me and not quoted.
The US supplier called me and said do you mind buying from the local Guy and I will make sure you do not pay any more than I have quoted.
All good until I get the invoice from the Australian distributor, the goods are in his shop and he wants an extra $500.00 just because he can 
The Australian distributor who did nothing but take the part numbers and order them, I assume he got way better prices than my self and seriously added no value to the transaction but actually made it more difficult.
Australian retailers wake up to yourselves!!!!

Tell him to stick the parts up his arse. Go and get them from the original supplier in the US through a US resident. I had the same issue with an electronic fuel sender. The manufacturer would not ship to me because I was in Australia and refered me to another US company that buy from them. The price I got from them was nearly 3 times what the original manufacturer quoted. But they then said "sorry you will have to go through our Australian agent". So I checked with them and the price was even higher.
In the end I got a friend in our US office to order the part for me and then I gave her the cash.
I can understand paying a bit extra to buy from a local dealer if they have it on the shelf and you can grab it and go but if they are just taking your money and ordering the part on your behalf what's the point? There is no value add in what they do.

Thats the thing Mike, the us supplier was happy to supply, but asked if I could but the their agent here.
So I was happy to support the local agent who thought it would be good to rip me off.
i will contact the us supplier and let them know what happened.

Retailers should move to a "use" not "abuse" mantra.
In my book anything more than 10% is abuse!
If they had said $2500 you'd probably have winced but taken it, however at $2750 you've taken exception and rightly so!
I got smashed on a quote from the local Honda dealership on a front spoiler lip for a Type R Integra $30 odd + shipping (factory direct) vs $1000 odd through the dealership. What the?? How the?? |

I'm currently in the middle of sourcing prices to do a dually conversion on my F truck. So far, prices from Australian suppliers of the American manufactured components/accessories I need will stop me going ahead.
That said, the same component suppliers in the USA have told me that they will sell and ship to me directly, so I'm waiting with interest their pricing.
In Australia, to supply the front and rear adaptors, 7 wheels, 7 tyres, and unpainted guards was $12,000.00 PLUS SHIPPING to me. That's fricken
In tHE USA to supply the same is about $3000.00.
Unless of course I wanted to drive it in and drive away. Well then there was no change out of $20 FAT ONES!!!
Its abhorent! It really is.

On the flip side there are some shops that do the right thing. I recently went to VPW in Epping and sourced my Kirkey seats through them.
The price on the seats in the US is about $350 each plus shipping. VPW did the pair for about AU $740. That seemed a pretty good price to me since shipping would have been expensive for such a bulky item. The down side was that it took a long time for them to arrive (6 months) but that that was partly down to supply problems with Kirkey in Canada.
I shop at VPW regularly for stuff that I don't want to wait for from the US. They keep a lot of stuff in their warehouse and have been good to deal with and don't seem to price gouge.

Good Point Mike,
Today I needed to find a Vacuum tank for a boost control system.
Went to Rocket industries, they pulled out the 3 types they had in stock, let me play with them for a few mins and I purchased one for $115.00
Checked and the price is within a few dollars from buying from the US.
Some get it some don't.

Most retailers wouldnt get out of bed for 10%. Interesting read here - closer to 30% markup across all retail (retailers margin). resulting in an average 5.5% operating profit after all costs. Obviously varies a lot over different sectors

We had a similar problem with a small rubber 'bumpon' we use by the thousands. We used to buy them from a local supplier, the price after not moving for years went from 10c to 17c each over 12 months.
I did some investigating, they are made in the US, I emailed the manufacturer told them I wanted to buy approx 50,000 at a time and they sell them to us (depending on exchange rate) for about 3c each including freight. Saved us $9,000.00 in the first year!
