Wazza, a few owners are saying they don't need to paint their car, the gelcoat is that good. That's pretty amazing when you consider the cost of a paint job on a Cobra, wouldn't you agree?

Sambo, it looks like we have over 80% of owners not painting their cars over the long term. Amazing hey, not what we were expecting at all.

That's awesome Craig, a credit to the build process and also your team. I'm super keen to see one in the flesh.
How are you progressing with the hardtop? I'm planning to cut and extend mine in the coming months - finally. Perhaps a discussion for another thread.

I've had a black gelcoat car (Harrison) and it was pretty ugly with the greatest of respect to Warwick. I've prep'd and painted my own cobra and all I can say to that is I'd rather marry my mother in law. What a suckful process that was. I thought I did a great job until I saw it in the daylight.....more runs than Bradman! I had my next car painted twice by 2 pro's after I crashed it. The first despite their claim to fame were hopeless (apparently I had hand sized star cracks coming through the paint because I splashed leaded fuel on it....nothing to do with them failing to fix and terminate the crack damage before painting.....WANKERS) and the 2nd who fixed the fluff ups of the 1st was good. But all very expensive. The cost is in the prep and certainly when you look at what's popping out of AP's moulds I'd struggle to the justify the $'s to paint it. To each there own but I really like the mould buff and polish finish and would be how I kept mine if I owned one. I guess if in doubt see the finish at the Nats and the picture will speak a thousand words.

Absolute......ly......heh heh.....see what I did there....heh heh,
I wouldn't say the finish is as good as a $10,000 paint job...but still, it's bloody impressive....
and when you get a nick/chip, gelcoat repairs almost invisibly, whereby expensive paint jobs are very hard to keep unblemished.
Most "normal" people,( i.e. not one of US!!)...wouldn't know what gelcoat was, and all they see is a really cool shiny Cobra....would never know(or care) that it wasn't paint.
Cheers,
Warren

My car is black and has not been detailed yet. The gel coat is a smooth gloss surface and even under the flouro lights in my garage the finish is flawless. There are no noticeable ripples unless you get down and eyeball the tops of the doors and then you ask your self if you are seeing imperfections or reflection from the lights and brick walls, if I have to go that far to find a flaw and still not be sure, I would say that is a pretty good out of the mould effort. No, I won't be painting my car just putting vinyl stripes over it.
Cheers
Russell

Indeed you did...and it's a stunner! If you drive it fast enough and stick your face into the wind, you'll find it impossible to frown.
Paint is for pussies.

I agree with Brad; life is good Jamo. Drove the Contemporary to work today. Setting off car alarms in a multi-level car park is such an immature joy!

Hey buddy...yup, plan on taking the tin can into work in a few hours myself. Find me a Prius or two to pull alongside on the highway and audibly thank the wankers for saving gas for me to burn.

Ski boats have been gel coated for years. Isn't it possible to have a metallic gel coat finish?
