Harrison Front Brakes

I need a little help I have a Harrison Cobra with the commodore front end in it, I want to upgrade the brakes and assume that they are commodore brakes and rotors? If they are commodore what model are they VB/VC? Thanks

I am not a Harrison guy, but I think I read somewhere that they use the VT/VX type front end.
I am sure a builder will pop in soon enough.

Standard brakes on the Harrison...VT Commodore.

Hi,
I have a set of near new 2000Kms old VT/VZ rotors and Calipers that I took off my Daytona so I could fit the Harrop big brake upgrade. Included are standard disk pads and Green Spot pads that I used once at Winton for a day.

Im in Melbourne so if interested, PM me as they are sitting unused in my shed

The GM sliding calipers are a poor option, when coupled with the Nissan Skyline twin pot rear calipers. A budget upgrade would be to use the Skyline fronts as well.

I have R33 GTST "Sumitomo" calipers on 310 dia rotors with EBC red pads and car stops great ! The balance was perfect on the rollers, when the car was registered.

I used Ford Territory rotors ( DBA 2107 or RDA 7934 ) Skimmed about 10mm off rotor overall diameter. 12mm adapter plate locates caliper on VR Commodore hub ( re-drilled for ford stud pattern )........was dead easy. I have a cad file for the adapter plate drawing.

I got AP Racing calipers from Sydney and they were easily fitted and the difference was enormous. Some pics in my gallery. Others have used the Nissan fronts with success.

I got some AP racing 4 pots on the front, stop extremely well. 17" wheels as well though.

You guys with the AP brakes must have some seriously sticky rubber. My tyres let go well before I reach the braking limit with the standard Commodore brakes. Kumho Ecsta KU31s.

Sambo, I would expect these guys are changing front calipers to units with more suitable piston sizes to optimise the front and rear brake balance.

I know the skyline calipers have a lot smaller piston area than the 2-piston PBR units.

Same deal with Jag brakes, you want to fit a front caliper with smaller piston area to get more rear brake bias.

Even fitting a 2-piston PBR instead of Jag 4 piston improves the brake balance.

Craig, my Cobra originally failed the brake test with the standard Harrison setup. But rather than downgrade the front brakes I replaced the rear brakes with larger units from the Holden Camira. I paid for the full brake test under VSB 14 and passed with flying colours. Brake bias is all good now.

Great to hear mate. Sounds like you have a really nice brake setup now.

To answer your original question, for a street car, no you don't need anything more.

Did the Camira brakes make much of a difference to the braking performance? Obviously helped with the test but I am wondering if it helped on the road as well.

Yes, definitely Geof. With R33 calipers the rears were not locking up soon enough under aggressive braking tests - now fixed. The nose of the car was also diving under brakes, whereas now the whole car hunkers down evenly. The brake pedal is also more progressive than before - not surprisingly.

Resurrecting another thread here. I came across this interesting big brake upgrade suitable for the VT Commodore front end, which is in the Harrison.

A 355mm rotor and calipers probably wouldn't fit inside my 17" wheels.

G'day Gregg. After a bit more research it appears we can go up to 330mm with 17" wheels. There are a number of 4 and 6 pot kits on eBay to suit VZ - search for Ksport or D2. These are probably made in China and not ADR compliant, which puts me off.

Next one I came across was a VF-spec upgrade kit with 322mm rotors, ebay item 181218009835, pictured below. Only twin piston but looks like a different design to the earlier calipers and the larger diam rotor will help.



A couple of places are selling an Alcon kit with 335x28 two piece rotors, 4 piston calipers, adapters, etc.

Ooh also while this thread is up - I hear you can use stock VT fronts and upgraded brembo calipers and rotors from the R33 on the rears, someone told me there was a model that came with brembos stock? Wondered if anyone knew anything about this or what model R33 they came off?
