Aussie Mike's machine shop
So my life has taken a bit of a turn. I took a redundancy at my job of 12 years. To be honest I'm not that upset about it. It was stressful with long hours and a lot of travel. I've been feeling a bit burned out for a while and it was time for a change. I've been in this industry for 27 years without a decent break (Always too busy to take long service leave etc).
So while I take some time off to enjoy myself, finish my Cobra and try to work out what my next move will be I figure I'll offer my machining, welding and fabricating services. I've often got requests for parts and stuff that I've made but usually decline since I never had enough time to work on my own stuff with family and work pressures. Now I've got some extra time. I've got a few jobs on the go at the moment. I've just finished off some CR bump steer kits for a couple of people and I'm doing a T56 mid shift conversion for another. I think I'll also soon be making some radial brake calliper mounts. All the best with the transition Mike. Sounds like you're taking a really level headed approach to it. Are you resisting the urge to do a bit of FIFO work in the mines?
I look forward to seeing what kinds of Aussie Mike goodies make their way onto Cobras now that you have some time to dedicate towards it. Your billet shift knob on my old blue Cobra was a winner. Every time I changed gears, it was a pleasure to grip your knob... |

I was one of the folks advising Malcolm Turnbul on his fibre to the node strategy for the NBN. I set up several technology demos for him on VDSL2 and FTTN installation. Hey Mike;
Whatever you turn your hand at, Im tipping you will it will be a success. Also if you need some bits and pieces for your shop material wise, go and see boys (Paul/Rob or Anton) at Tooltime and go through the scrap and offcut bins. Although Im not there to look after you, it would still be worth an ask and may help out and Im sure they would be very reasonable. I can give them a heads up if that's something you wish to do. Good luck Mike. I've been retired now for 12 years and truly am busier now than when I was working. After a few months away from it, you will find it hard to go back to the daily grind stone. I'm sure that you will scrape a good living in your machine shop doing what you love.
