Side indicators

Kind of boring but it's what I did today in the few mins I had spare.

I am using Toyota Kluger/Camry side indicators as I like the shape. These are sealed, cannot replace the globe, and expensive at $68 (!!!) each. They are formed for a plug-in connector of course, but the pigtail doesn't exist Toyota say they plug straight into the loom and the plug cannot be ordered. I didn't want to scrounge wrecking yards so I added my own tail.



First Dremeled away some of one side



Then soldered on wires and covered with heat-shrink





Then filled it up with hot glue





After the glue set I trimmed off the excess and then a couple of stepped sizes of heat shrink and it came out very nicely

Nice job, I use areldite or sikaflex when I do similar. Did it for a couple of connectors on my car.

Oh what a feeling!!

Bluddy Toyota tossers but then that's how the auto market has been making its money for years.

Ripping us off for the small replacement parts.

Will you need to modify the "clip in" section as the fiberglass body will be thicker than the sheet metal one on the Toymotor?

Can't wait for pictures of them installed - this is one mod I was planning for down the line

yes I will need to give a touch up with the Dremel on the clip and/or the body where the clip sits, should be easy.

araldite takes ages to set
hot glue gun takes 20 seconds
I bought a 20 dollar hot glue gun from jaycar a year ago and use it for heaps of stuff
especially repairing kids toys because they need it fixed asap

5 minutes is not exactly ages.

it is when u have to stay still holding it while it dries hehe
even super glue is crap these days as half the stuff doesn't even hold
only thing its good for is gluing your fingers together

I wouldn't use hot glue gun on something that has to hold 20 or more kgs
but for small plastic and even material and trim pieces that keep peeling up
I think its better than most things

Funny how you used to pay $10 for a tube of super glue in the hardware. Now they have packs of 10 in the bargain shops for $2.

I agree hot glue is good for many applications, especially in electronics.

Plan B, I found an indicator that I like more. With all the talk of the Ferrari side indicators, I checked them out in detail on Aussie Mike's Cobra when I was over at his place the other day, and initially I was sold on them, but the more I thought about it the more I went off them, each to their own.

I found one I like more than the Toyota one, they are Infiniti, or Nissan, as used on several Infiniti's and current model Muraro. Rather interestingly the body construction is EXACTLY the same as the Toyota one, they just don't say Toyota on them. Anyway I pot committed today by breaking out the micro air saw and cutting the hole! Very happy with this shape indicator.

First measured out the shape with the vernier, drew it in Sketchup, cut it out and traced the outline;

Do these lights need to have reflective qualities for ADR compliance? ?? I was thinking of secreting some leds around the edges of my side vents..... any thoughts.

sinkers: you will need "E" marked compliant lenses, so basically you need to find an OE light that you like on an existing road car.
