Cams To Make Frontal Head Restraints Mandatory
In case people weren't aware from 1 July, 2014 all international and national circuit races, road events and off road events, except where specifically exempted due to the type of vehicle;
From 1 January, 2015, all state circuit races, road events and off road events, except where specifically exempted due to the type of vehicle. As this filters down to hill climb and sprinting this may become more relevant to Cobra guys but get one anyway if your tracking your car.

I bought one yesterday.
I have been toying with the idea for a while, my car doesn't have much (any) head support in the seating so I thought that a HANS would be a good idea.
Reading that CAMS was going to make them mandatory for the bulk of local Motorsport I thought I may as well buy one sooner rather than later.

I was speaking to the guys at Revolution Racegear yesterday about the pros and cons of motorcycle vs auto helmets and he pointed me to that first article. Motorcycle helmets (while generally cheaper) are not equipped for HANS devices and may be dead money in the long run. I'm looking at the Bell RS7 or Arai GP-6S, depending on how they fit my melon.

Great to hear and see people going the next step in their personal safety.
As a heads up, if your thinking of buying new/replacement harnesses, buy a Hans compatible one. They tend to be narrower over the shoulder and have a shark toothed grip on the inner side which helps with the belt maintaining its position over the Hans device when your belting up and staying in place when driving etc.
A 3 inch wide harness is a bit of a pig with a Hans as it tends to sit half on the device and half on your shoulder which then leads to it wanting to slide off...
Also, get the pro's to fit your anchor points and if you can afford it buy the "sliding tethers" option rather than fixed. Gives you the ability to turn your head a little more. Just an fyi.

Whilst I am all for advancing safety(and will be getting one myself), doesn't the effectiveness of the HANS system rely heavily on the harness fitment? I would be concerned that they are mandating one thing without ensuring that they are properly fitted supported by the right fitting harness?
One more question: As we do "sprints" and not "Races" are we excluded? More of a technicality question.
cheers Gregg

Gregg, I'd be thinking if your harness isn't installed properly, Hans or no Hans your in trouble should you need it to save you. Correct harness fitment is a given.
While sprints currently don't fall under the mandate, many event promoters strongly advise having them. Up here every drivers meeting its spelt out... GET ONE!
I'd suggest going forward they will be pushing for sprinters to take their safety more seriously. The days of long sleeved shirts, enclosed shoes and gardening gloves are on their way out.

Agreed, but some people might not know if their harness is installed/fitted properly. I know the harness come with some good instructions but sometimes its the seat, not the harness that is the problem. Anyway - more focus in this area is good for all of us.
P.S. Just put my new boots on the Cobra for ShelbyFest. How many more sleeps?
cheers
Gregg

Good work Sambo.
Because I live in the sticks I am yet to see mine, it should be here tommorow.
I didn't look into tinted visors but since i usually wear sunnies so it won't be an issue for me anyway.
I'll be interested to see how you go though.

Gav, I got mine from Revolution Racegear. Apparently they had the tinted visor "out the back somewhere" but the young bloke serving me was yawning throughout the whole process and said he couldn't find it so I paid for the helmet and walked.
It's weird, the R1 isn't mentioned on Bell's websites. The only other place I can find a visor is here: BELL R1 - TINT VISOR [Bell R1] - Tracksformations
It says "only available in light tint". I wonder how effective that will be verses my polarised Oakleys.

I bought mine from revolution in Adelaide.
Chris was really helpfull, and was happy to swap or changeover anything I bought.
Given it is 4hrs to Adelaide or 6hrs to Melbourne from here, having someone so keen to help over the phone was great.
He might be worth a phone call.

Gav, that link above is actually another Revolution Racegear store. I have a tinted visor on the way for $125 and he (James) said that was their second last one. Free postage on orders over $100 if you're thinking of getting one.

My gear turned up today, I phoned Richard and spoke about the visors, he had plenty in stock.
But one less now.

Gav, here's mine with the dark tinted visor. It came with the HANS post anchors already fitted. I kept quiet when I saw that - or are they standard issue?
