Modena's progress update

I have had the Easter/ANZAC break off from work, and it's been great. Some great family time and the odd block of hours to work on the Cobra. I have been getting stuck into the wiring. The fuse block is under-dash, and both front and back body looms are run.

I love the build threads with pics, and sometimes I think we need more of this on here and less "rubbish," so here is my contribution for a while.

I have now done about half the fuel system plumbing, still to plumb in the low-pressure lift pump and surge-tank overflow lines, and to make some folded aluminium guards for the surge tank and the high-pressure pump as they're mounted in the wheel well and being aluminium I want to protect them from flying stones. I am using the Corvette filter/regulator combo. All my fluid lines are Aeroflow stainless braid with black fittings. Fuel is -6AN Teflon lines. My pumps are Fuelab, enough for 600+HP in "low" speed mode, and over 1200HP if I want to add PCM speed control;

Had the rear flexible brake lines made-up, so rear brakes are done. Also bought an Optima RedTop battery and had the battery cables made-up for + and -.

Originally I relocated the LS3 purge valve from the OE position at the front of the motor near the throttle body to the rear of the manifold, but since changed my mind again and now it's on the trans-tunnel, the hanging hose will connect to the inlet on the back of the inlet manifold that was originally meant for the brake booster;

And speaking of booster, there isn't one. The three master cylinders are now bolted up, all pedals are done and clutch hydraulics are ready to receive transmission;

It's been in for ages, but the Improved Racing oil thermostat is seen here along with the Aeroflow powder coated black washer bottle;

The Scosche Bluetooth car kit arrived, and with my planned external amplifier and speakers is an easy install (still need to source amp and speakers);

For wiring the under-dash rat's nest looks worse than it is, it's all clear and well laid out and coming together well. I built the fuse panel and looms myself, haven't happened across to many mistakes yet from my pre-planning. It will look much neater once it's finally sorted and zipped together;

Great update Ben, you are making good progress.

Cheers

Great update, thanks. Are you going to have a heater in your setup?

Regards.

Great work Ben, I especially like your idea of moving the purge valve, that thing is big and ugly and gets in the way. Cheers Gregg

No heater mando. Thanks for the encouragement all.

Rossba 04-27-2014 04:13 AM

Good job.

I had to have a heater to blow hot air onto the windscreen for the dimister. Just saying.
I am looking at going electric heater and free up the engine bay of heater hoses.

Hi Ross, according to the ADR a demister is not required if you have no roof. Just like windscreen wipers/washers are not required if you go through rego with no windscreen.....

Hi all,

I've just completed engineering compliance and was made to have a demister.
Interesting.....

That is interesting. Here is the extract from ADR 42/04;

DEMISTING OF WINDSCREENS

Every motor vehicle having a windscreen must be fitted with a device capable of removing condensed moisture from the inside of the windscreen. This requirement does not apply to LA, LB, LC, LD or LEM vehicle categories or vehicles that do not have provision for a roof.

Do you have a soft-top Chook, or ferrules to possibly fit one?

Chook 04-28-2014 03:04 PM

Hi Modena,
Thanks for sharing your build and photos too.
I've got a windscreen, soft top and ferrules. However was never asked to apply the soft top. So maybe because I have the provision for a roof, I had to have a demister!?

Hi Ben heater is a good thing when you are waiting in line at the nationals.

Aussie Mike 04-28-2014 05:03 PM

I went with heated seats for those moments.

I got mine through rego with no heater demister however I had no windscreen or wipers either.

I am fitting a heater now though. there are a few small units from old cars that fit up under the dash. You see them at swap meets from time to time. I found a Denso heater for mine.

Demister only required if there is provisions for a roof.
So having ferrules and a full size screen they would have made you fit a demister, because the option is there to fit a roof.

My car when complied had aero screen and no ferrules, so I did not require wipers, washers or demister.

This is mine the day of compliance check.
No quick jacks, aero screen, headrests, heat shields on side pipes, no spinners on rims etc.

I used the heater /demister unit from "Finish Line "...pretty compact and works well.

Mine looked very similar except underbody exhaust meant the suspension had to be wound up for adequate clearance.

I obtained rego in VIC without Heater/Demister with Windscreen installed. Just don't have any hardware like lift-a-dots studs etc installed to indicate you will put a roof on it. (I still don't have a roof BTW). Its registered as a "roadster" i believe which means no roof. Happy to be corrected. Cheers Gregg.

Boxhead - mine was similar, no front quick jacks, dorky head rests, padded dash, padded sun visors, sports exhaust removed and twin mufflers on single exhaust, stickers for ADR exemptions, etc etc
Fun and games!
