this is one of the reasons i stopped looking interstate for a car if i had to pay for a full engineering report to get rego on a interstate car here in sa i may as well be paying engineering on a new car and build it like i want/needed .
the laws between states is a dogs breakfast i found out

Does that mean that once my car is rego'd in SA and I want to move interstate, I need to re engineer it ?

The only deterrent in NSW back in 2002 was the exhaust must exit beyond the last open body seam (door) and NOT emit gasses toward pedestrian access. I guess this has changed since then.

Most likely. State rego authorities have appointed/credited approving engineers and want a sign off from them. If your report is thorough, an engineer from another state may review and accept it and sign off, hopefully at a lesser cost than a full report from scratch.

When I rebuilt my 1st car I went live pipes but I wouldn't do it again. Noise, legality and public/family liability makes it a small gain for a potentially significant loss. They get VERY lava like hot and the thought of little kids burning themselves etc is too much for me to do it again. I have them on my track car but that's a different story. Still after 10 years of Cobra ownership I still burn my own legs.
Regarding state legality and engineering, I recently discovered that some tires I wanted to use, Nitto NT01 R specs are only completely street legal in NT, WA and SA. They are deemed a competition tyre in NSW, VIC and QLD due to there being no traditional load rating printed on the sidewall.
Strange how you don't read that anywhere online and that NSW retail tyre sellers sell them as DOT street legal tyre (just not in NSW Vic or QLD)
So if we now have state legalities splitting tyre legality good luck with cross boarder ICV and side pipe compliance. Another case of politics and bureaucracy gone mad!

Re: re-engineering.
If you move, then no, but if you sell it, yes... the joys of ridiculous systems in place.
You moving means they can't stop you having your possessions and can't make you re-engineer it. However... if you sell it, then they will.
It's a load of crap and I reckon most of them know it too, but changing the system is too hard.

Treeve, does that also mean if you move interstate and register it there without re-engineering, then sell it some time later, does it need re-engineering then for the new owner remaining in that state?

Hello Andrew
I'm doing a similar car to yours. I had a look at your photo's and there is one that almost, but not quite shows the exhaust manifold.
That is what I'm playing with at the moment. Are your manifolds off the shelf? The nearest I have found so far are block huggers from the US at about $200/pair. They are 4 1/2" at the widest and I am not sure if they will clear the glasswork.
If yours are off the shelf ones, would you know the manufacturer/supplier or part numbers etc.
Any chance of a photo of the right hand side manifold (from above).

I have had no problems with the cops and side pipes. While undergoing a breath test I said to the cop watch your pants on the pipes they will melt them the cop said thanks and took a step back.

Side pipes have been legal since 2007, just getting the rulemakers to read the rules is the hard part.
