Cats who likes them?
I finally drove my Cobra up to 100 km/h but didn't go anywhere. I had to certify my emissions test on the dyno. I was using the cats of the donor vehicle but they didn't get the level below 14%. He suggested a pair of FG turbo cats. The exhaust shop has sourced a second hand one. I rang Ford to check the price of a new one, and I fell over. $3470. AAArgh. I am running LPG because I didn't want fuel injection, then he tells me with a decent cat I could be running a carby. So does that mean emission from a one of vehicle is still less strict then a mass manufactured car? Has anyone got a Cobra passed with a carby in Australia?

That's odd, as I was told years ago when I registered mine on LPG that is was a clean fuel and didn't need cats. Bureaucracy gone mad!

Me too ! My LPG passed OK but another man I know couldn't pass with lpg . He actually appealed the RTA and they gave him a dispensation because he couldn't pass 8 tests. ( this was ages ago) It turned out that all the "tuners" didn't know about pushing the mixture screws in to engage the adjustment. so much for expert LPG "specialists"

my last cobra was straight lpg had to run cats and they made me put a air pump on the engine as well it passed first time .was told yrs ago you would never get a carby car passed due to emissions

I has to do a IM 240 drive test. Accelerate get it up to 100 k's slow down etc. We got the cats really hot and that dropped only 2% . So the cats really make a difference, even with LPG. I argued with the inspectors because the kit was bought in 2002 so it would only need to meet a idle test level. They wanted me to prove all that. Which I did, then they sent me all the requirements, and they still wanted a full drive test. I tried leaning it of, etc but didn't make much difference. Sometimes I think I should have just bought a second hand Cobra.
I had to stamp the vin number on the chassis and get it inspected, just for that. They got me to take it of the trailer etc, just so they can lift the bonnet and look at a number. Then I have to the all the lane tests etc within 3 months and get it fully inspected. If I don't then quote. "I have to this all over again" I said, what, just check the vin number. What the? Is that going to magically dissapear after 3 months.

Cats can be finicky on doing their job. My factory cats failed the e-test and the car was only 4 years old, it was the 1st DMV requested emissions test. The tech doing the test had the foresight to not do the "run for the record" check and said you're not passing, you need to go somewhere and get your motor/pipes HOT then bring it back. So I did, went around the corner and let the motor run at 3500 RPM in neutral for about 10 minutes. Brought it back and passed no problem. The point being make sure your headers and pipes are hot as hell with minimum sit time before they run the test.

The test was done at a local garage who must be qualified to do these tests. So I'm wondering if Regency inspection center will also do some sort of test emission wise. I regular do training at the RAA and the emissions have to be halfed about every ten years. That's why eventually only hybrids will pass emissions. The latest Mazda six even has an alternator that only charges when It's decelerating and it charges up a massive capacitor to run the electrics. The alternator charges up to 25 volts. So even when you disconnect the battery, things are still live. All to save a tiny bit of fuel and meet emissions.

I poured the cat out some milk today, I don't know how he got in there.
I have found new cat that meet uero 4 emissions for only 230 dollars each. But I'll try the second hand fg turbo ones first. I didn't know you could ceramic coat them. How much difference is ceramic coating compared to wrapping? Some say the exhaust falls apart etc. I have wrapped 2 cars, one exhaust peeled apart like a onion and the other was fine. Is a cat a restriction or is it best to fit some sports mufflers, and does the cats actually quieten the exhaust?

I just ceramic coated my cats. Engine is heaps cooler. Cats are meant to reach effective temp quicker.
Yes the cats are restrictive. Generally, higher euro number = more restrictive, as denser cells per square inch (in order to get more sacrificial material surface area inside the cat).
They do make the exhaust a bit quieter. But the cat on its own would be insufficient to make it quiet enough for a rego pass in most cases. I needed the cat and 2 mufflers (each side) on my full length undercar system to keep the noise low enough for a pass. That's the stationary 90db test at 75% revs.
