Took me some time, but I found the rule about self cancelling:
Qld TMR inspection rules.
Reasons for rejection, From Page 10:
The turn signal switch is not readily operable by the driver from the driving position and, if fitted as original equipment by the manufacturer, is not self cancelling.

Are the inspectors allowed to accept gifts?

I see nothing in the regulations that patrickt linked to that indicate self-cancelling is a requirement.

Hi Glen, my first car was an A40 Farina. The indicator was as you said in your uncles car and it was non time based auto canceling, maybe by clockwork and was was a plastic or possibly Bakelite handle
The one you have sourced looks more the business for a Cobra

Hi David.
The Cole Hersee switch - already purchased - is ideal for what I perceive my requirements to be.
I hope the inspector agrees .....and according to their documentation, I should be OK.
Cheers!

Show up with the Aussie version of a bag of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a bottle of single malt for him. You will pass the inspection.

So I turn up with a 289FIA Cobra replica (a "chick magnet" for sure!) ....and I need to take a chicken sandwich as a gift/bribe as well? All I can say is that your inspectors must be a shallow bunch if they're that easily bought
Cheers!
Glen
(what brand of whiskey would you suggest?)
edit: I assume "chick magnet" is not exclusively an Australian term

It is indeed a universal colloquialism. But don't magnets repel when they are below the equator?

I have been going thru the same considerations on my Lotus 7 replica. I ended up selecting the on-off-on toggle switch as used on the bug eye Sprite. I almost selected the early Jag XK style self-cancelling switch. But remembering the how annoying it was to have to turn it back on when it cancelled waiting at a light to turn left made me steer away from that direction (no pun intended).
As always, your choice will be accepted or rejected by a State official that will have a case of "anal-necktitus" and if he/she will listen to your reasoning will depend on if they have installed a glass belly button so they can see what's going on around them.
