please help
hey guys, how were your week ends?
i went for a drive down to berry just before nowra on the south coast today(for the non locals), and once again my bloody car start to backfire out the exhaust
so i get out and remove the idle jets and yet again another bit of **** in one of the jets
do any of you guys have such problems with webers or know anybody who does?
i am seriously thinking about trying a 4 barrel because of the above problem
should i try an rpm air gap? vic jnr? funnel web?
i know an air gap only goes to 6500rpm,but with my current 44 idfs my engine runs out of puff at about 6300 give or take which i believe is due to the 44mm venturi......does anybody have an opinion on my thoughts?
will a 750/780 four barrel with a single plane such as vic jnr, funnel web(3500-7500rpm) give me more hp above my current 6300?

Filters
Have you got a good quality inline filter fitted?
When I had my datsun 180B SSS & my dune buggy it was very important to use a good inline filter.
I honestly never had any troubles I believe because when I put it all together (includeing rebuilding the carbs) I had no troubles at all, everything was clean and no dust, no rags, only solvent and compressed air was used to clean them.
My carbs in both cases where side draft so allthough not the same they where very similar, 45mm side drafts.
If the carbs are clean and the lines are clean then a good filter should stop everything.
Try a new filter if you allready have 1, maybe it is where the crap is commeing from.

If your only current problem is down to the quality of filtering on your inlet side, then I'd keep the webers (and fit a large filter that can go down to 4 or 5 microns). If you are still having driveability problems that are tuning related, then I'd flick the webers and try a single plane manifold. It seems like the only problem that you've been having with the Mustang is always related to these damn webers. I'm kinda surprised that you have had such patience with them.
Do you get on OK with the local mustang club? Surely someone there will have a manifold and carb lying around for you to try. For the sake of a set of intake gaskets, I'd do it - if nothing else but for you to know what each intake combo feels like. I would suggest that a 750 carb - either vac. sec. or DP - and a Vic Jr manifold would make more peak HP for your combo, and be a true "set and forget" tune-up deal. You may lose a little lower range torque, but not enough to be a concern.
What trans are you using again?
Diff gears?
Tyre size?

I agree
I'd be keeping the webers and looking at my inlet feeds...all the way from the tank to the carbs.
One of the problems with a resto like yours is...how clean is the inside of the tank after all these years....whats the inside of the lines like...did ya run a few litres of fuel from the lines to flush them properly before you hooked them up?
Did you install some good free flowing but fine filters.
If the fuel is yukky..then it dont matter whats sittin on top of the motor, you will always have problems

I have a bit of an obsession with clean fuel. I asked Scott to mount my main fuel filter (The one that goes between the fuel tank and the high pressure fuel pumps). He was expecting some little 3" x 2" cylindrical filter, and I turned up with the monster shown below. He was heard to mutter something about donkey's anatomy....
From there, the fuel goes into the two main pumps - which each have their own filters - and there's another Bosch brand of filter after these pumps. Clean fuel is good fuel!!!
My main filter is an Afco brand. They come with either a stainless or paper style filtering element. The stainless is cleanable and therefore obviously replaceable. While it doesn't filter below 10 microns, it really is all you'll need. http://www.secureperformanceorder.co...ProductID=2672

Yep..
I'd hate to think what would would happen to your monster Craig, If it started to lean out cuz of some crap in the fuel.
Cant be too careful...anyways..I dont even trust the filters in the bowsers. Cant count how many times I've filled up and got dirty fuel.
You all take care
