LS1 engines
Hello everyone.
My question today is in regards to seeking compliance for my car and one of the questions for the NT motor vehicle registery is What does the engine weigh?
I have searched the Holden manuals at work and cannot find a referance that shows the weight.
In the NT I have to fill out a report for an "individually constructed vehicle" that is sent to Darwin for approval by the Technical Advisory Committe.
Once I submit this report I have 3 years in which time to construct the vehicle and apply for a VIN.
So if anyone out there knows what a gen III LS1 engine weighs can you please let me know.
Thanks in advance, David

I think it's 180KG but I'll have to check around.
Cheers

I picked up my rebuildable steering rack today $40.00 and a complete steering colomn with wheel, shroud and switch gear for $100.00, the colomn looks good but I will replace the upper bearing anyway.

Sounds like you are making good progress there. The three year time frame should not worry you.
Hey did the photos come out.
Cheers

The photos are in my pc but I cant seem to get them to upload into clubcobra.
The plan is to be registered and have the VIN by latest feb-march 2005 then tear it apart to paint and modify.
I want it to be complete and pretty so I can drive to Goulbourn come 2005 nationals.

That sounds about right for an engine and gearbox. The T56 is a heavy beast at about 45KG.
Cheers

Sort of going off on a tangent here, if you can help, I'd appreciate it.
I have a Ford FE, whatever your opinion of it, that's what I have, can't change it.
I understand the LS1 uses an oil pump that drives off of the front snout. And is very thin.
First, is this true? Second, it's a common factory part?
I was considering adapting something like that for the FE, but wasn't too sure if it would be possible.
If that is the way the LS1 oil pump works, could you provide me
with a part number that I could take to the local parts counter to order to play around with. I'm assuming it's not too expensive, but again, not sure.
The reason I even think about this is that there was a version of the FE which did use a crank driven oil pump mounted under the front cover, though Ford's version was gear driven and much larger.
Thank you.

sizzler - have you considered buying a single stage pump (like the diff oil pump/bracket combos as sold by the Nascar take-off part resellers on Ebay)? If you could have a drive mandrel machined up to suit, you wouldn't have spent a lot of money at all. While it's not a proper dry sump, it's pretty widely accepted that an external oil pump is more desirable than an internal pump.

Sorry for my total ignorance of all things GM.
I spent some time looking up what I could on the web.
Found these pictures:
Found this warning/comment:
“…I heard the pump failures were all in 2000 and older model years.”
Generally found the price to range between US$150 and US$200 for “ported and blueprinted” pumps, but also found this AU$595
Hi Volume version:
http://www.capa.com.au/prices_ls1.htm
So far, nothing I’ve read is putting me off the idea too much.
What I haven’t found is actual data:
1) How much does an LS1 pump pump? Does an LS6 pump pump more?
2) At what pressure?
3) What is considered “Hi Volume”?
4) Granted there seems to be a history of problems with the stock pumps, what were the problems and what (if anything) was determined to cause them?
I’ve considered an external pump, but I have a (perhaps) unreasonable fear of belts driving critical engine components. Just me. Also, less stuff hanging off the engine looks better to me. I’m willing to reconsider. Do you have any links or pictures to what you consider good external pump systems?
Thanks for any help. Would appreciate any leads to other sites where I could find additional information.
