Question Gauges

Hello all,

Can any of you guys that have bought gauges for
your cars here in Australia tell me what options we
have available from manufacturers for gauges with
kilometre readings.

Autometer has the Ultralites but that is not the look
I was trying to achieve. I believe Sports Comp as
well but only in smaller size dial.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Nick

Nick,

I went the black VDO route as they complied with ADR , matched the body colour and when back lit showed red to match the stripes. Pictures in my gallery.

VDO also do white plus a classic range.

Before I settled on the Autometer guages I was looking at VDO quages. Phil Neall is running these and they are a nice looking guage. They are available in black or white faced versions and they do some vintage style ones.

There's also a company that take the VDO guages and change the faces to make them look like the traditional Smiths guages.

Cheers

VDO cockpit vision just like Phil's.

Right size and style....come with black bezel which can be changed to chrome after the man looks at them.

Can also be modified as Mike said with a more original face, or more to the point...change the needles to white rather than the red as they come...I'm not gonna worry about that I'm happy with the look as is.

Can have red, green or white ilumination.

Thanks for that information.

White needles would be a good option.

Does anyone recommend any suppliers on our
side of the country.

Cheapest place we found was http://www.howardinstruments.com.au/

VDO Cockpit Vision 300kph speed, taco and 6 x 50mm gauges and all senders came to $673 delivered. Cool price hey. This was May 2003 though.

We actually got someone local to match it, so never found out how good their service was.

Only a 220KMH Speedo! You'll be winding that off the end on those NT roads

BTW i think it was Howard instruments that was dong the Smiths conversions on the VDO guages.

Nick

I used Howard Instruments in Northern Rd, Heidelberg, Victoria.

They use the electronic VDO instruments and are the VDO agents.

They are the guys who replace the VDO face with the Smith's face. The gauges look very authentic. There is a photo on my gallery but you will need to enlage to gain clarity.

My cost in 2003 for the total set including tank sender was $1065. I have the tacho, Speedo and six gauges with clock.

The contact at Howard Instruments is, Roger Howard. Roger is familiar with the Cobra and GT40 builder requirements and supplies a number of the well known kit builders and parts suppliers.

Good luck.

Yeah I was abit concerned with the speedo only going to 220, but wasnt overly concerned as most driveing will be going by the tacho anyway.

What concerns me most is boxheads bed is doing 52 km/h. If his bed can go that fast, just how bloody fast is his car going to be???

Price we got from Howard was with electronic speedo. Never worked out why it was so cheap, came with fuel tank sender and other senders. Gauges were: fuel, water temp, oil temp, volt, vacumm/boost, oil pressure and of course taco. Also went for 100mm speedo & taco.

Looked into Pricol, not sure why we didn't go that way. I think we were not keen to go away from the trusty VDO. Were a little worried about cheaper price I think as well.

Only advice I can give, is to seriously think about not going for a 300kph speedo. It's really hard to use on the street to stick to legal speeds. 200-220kph speedo is a lot easier to use. Not as cool, but definitely a lot more practical.

I agree with 400TT the 300 kph speedo is not user friendly as the graduations( other than 60) are difficult to judge taking into consideration zero or minimal tolerance of speed cameras.

I'm quite pleased with the look of the Autometer speedo. It goes up to 260 and has large numbers at 40KM increments and smaller numbers at 20KM increments. This means there is an obvious mark at the common speed limits of 60K 80K and 100K.

I must admit the 300KMH speedo has the bragging rights though. As long as you have the go nedded to get you up there.

Dick Smith's amazing 198MPH equates to 318KMH That's Fast

Cheers
