Default Cracked windscreen

I opened the shed this morning and there's a crack from top to bottom, right in the middle of my windscreen

It's been fitted for over 12 months, I drove the car 300km over the w/end and also yesterday, put it away with no crack and now there it is.

Anyway, I've read all the posts here on this issue, so before I replace it the major thing that seems to stop it reoccuring is to get the new one fitted with urethane, not the rubber gasket.

I'll do the string line check and does anyone reccon a midscreen brace is
necessary?

Any further suggestions appreciated

Only if you have a ballooning soft top or a hard top trying to lift the screen at speed.

My 2c anyways.

What a Rip off from Obrien's Glass and I can concur that you can buy the whole shooting match for the same kind of money!
I can buy the frame and wings etc for $1000 landed in Australia from the States less the glass.

The Glass could come in the same package as it is well package in styrofoam and should survive the trip.

Fed Ex( air freight) Offers a excellent service and on your doorstep within 10 days.

USA ebay glass is about $350 plus shipping.

Novus Glass in Mitcham or Ringwood has the windscreen and cost is $325 fitted.

When ordering the American-sourced frame, how does one know that the glass supplied locally from say, O'Briens or Novus will fit?

Is the glass a standard size that will fit all frames?

I got tired of replacing glass years ago. A Lexan screen has been in ever since with no problems and at times I have demonsrated its strength with a hammer........no problems.
We had a problem with roadworthy in S.A, untill one of the Conrad owners took a frame and a four pound hammer and let them try to break it.......They accepted them after that....

We had a guy recently with a golf ball strike. '08 Prado front screen.

The local windscreen guy, who comes to you, $250.00 all up.

OBrien Glass, you have to go their "specialised' workshop, where they use extra special grade 5 technicians and advanced adhesives...........$695.00

I just (last week) got a replacement glass from O'Briens.
Cost was $150 in ALice Springs.

The glass is to suit standard Cobra frame.

Back to the drawing board and I will be making further enquiries and I would doubt that the windcreen could be bought for $150!

All American windscreen frames are designed and built for the US Ac cobra market just like the English and the Superperformance Cobras.
Superperformance makes its frame in house.
There should be no deviation just like the back yard enterprise down under who have their own tooling and have supplied the local Australian Ac Cobra market.

Take it to a glass shop for a 2nd or 3rd opinion if you get over quoted.
I know I can get glass for circa $250 here includes emerald tax but not fitting.

First thing I did when I got my roller was to run past a few shops and see if replacement was ever going to be a problem, one glance at the manufacturers numbers on the glass and everyone was cool it wouldn't be a hassle.

As both Boxhead and i have said. The price for an ADR compliant piece of glass to fit a cobra frame is around the $150 mark. That is to call them on the phone, say i need glass for an AC cobra kit car order it, pick it up the next day and install it. I think perhaps the confusion here is installation. This would obviously be much more but it is not a difficult task. I even managed to make my own frame for the glass!

Yes, I am talking about the glass only, sitting on a rack in my shed.

There for "Just in Case"

As I am sure the local glass shop would not have it in stock, and to get to Alice I would expect it to take a week.
For $150, I dont have to wait a week if I shatter a screen.

I got my urethane sealant from Bunnings. Made by Sika, says it is for windscreens on the tube. Black colour.

I cut small rubber packers to space the glass off the frame at bottom and sides and made sure there was plenty of sealant all round the channel before the glass went in, I then gunned around the edge with a small nozzle.

Has been good for the last 12 months.
