Polished alternator wanted
I looking for a polished aluminium alternator. I have seen the chrome versions at Castlemaine auto electrics, but would prefer the polished type.
My alternator could be pulled apart and polished, but as it is a few years old, I thought that I would upgrade to a new unit.
Anyone seen a polished one for sale in Australia.
Bernie

Hi Bernie,
MSD make a 140 amp unit that can only be described as a piece of art. They are made from billet alluminium and look fantastic.
Outlaw Speed Shop have them in Adelaide so if there here, you must be able to get them in your neck of the woods.
Regards.

The mount certainly does make the Alternator look s-h-i-t-t-y! Top effort Mike!

Hey Nice Alt tensioner,
I actually first spotted this type of setup on hotrods,
did you make that one or is it commercially available?
I was thinking of checking out marine chandlery stores but if one is easy to come by,less I have 2 make..
I just dissasembled my bosch type alternator and polished the shells .change the bearings and brushes while your at it.
Dont use a chromed alloy alternator ,
they break,
the chroming process makes the alloy brittle..

Hi Peter,
The bracket and tensioner are home made. I made the left and right handed threaded ends but you could use small rod ends. Unfortunately the sizes I wanted weren't in stock so I figured I machine them from stainless.
You can buy left hand thread taps at specialist threading suppliers. I go through Goliath in melbourne. If it has a thread they probably have a a tap and die for it.
Good tip on the chrome alternator.
I've been searching the wreckers for an alternator off a daihatsu charade. They use a Nipon Denso alternator that's tiny but still puts out 50 Amps. I've only got about 6mm clearance between my current alternator and the chassis rail and I cant tuch the alternator in any closer. Who needs 100 Amps in a car with no accessories any way (not even a radio).
Cheers

Hey Mike,
thanks for the tips,
Great job on the tensioner,
Id kill for a lathe sometimes!
looks like Im back to fabricating one.
I would probably reconsider a 50A alt on an injected car,
youd be surprised what they require and dont like low voltage,
and at any one time in a cobra could have running,
thermofan 10-15a
heater/blower 10a
head/taillights 15-20a
So you could peg 40a or so without including the engine electrics at night.
you probably have the best chance of repairing a bosch alt anywhere-anytime also which is attractive,
I think my commodore one is a 70a and are cheap and easy to come by.its the one that has 2 bottom mounts and the same top eyelet as the one pictured.
with the 2 bottom mounts its easier to make the mounting very rigid, needed with gilmer belts the vibrations will find every weak point if any!
just my .02
Peter..
