Default Question for Leeroy and Aussie Mike

Hi guys,

I have been having a look at both of your galleries and have noticed that you have totally different exhaust systems.

You both have the same kits and both are running the same motors.

As I am have the same kit and motor as you, which is the best system to use and why?

Rod

P.S Leeroy the front cover of your booklet is very informative.

I'm running live side pipes and Leeroy is running a full under body system. Both systems have their pros and cons.

The side pipes are traditional for 427SC cars and are part of the character of the Cobra.

Side pipes are good for ground clearance and you can build a very free flowing system. They can be loud and obnoxious which may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you like.

They sound great but it can get a bit wearying on long trips.

They are also not technically legal as the exhaust is not allowed to exit towards the foot path. This is an issue at rego time but you probably won't get booked for it later on.

They can also give you an nasty burn on your leg or you passengers leg if you forget they are there when getting out of the car.

The under body system is good for controling the noise and avoiding those leg burns. Leeroys side pipes are cosmetic so don't get hot but maintain that cool Cobra look.

Ground clearance can be a problem as can heat radiated into the foot boxes and under side of the car (especially with cats). Space limitations may limit your options for building a free flowing exhaust and it may make working on the car a bit more difficult..

So both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. You just have to decide which one is right for you.

Cheers

Thanks Mike,

Now the next question, if I go for live pipes is there anyone in Melbourne that you know of that makes then? I don't have the talent to make like you have done.

If you are not in a hurry I could build you a set. I won't be able to do them until I've got my car registered and some other peoples work out of the way though.

Cheers

Hi Mike,
Just a quick question regarding your comment on registration of cobras with side pipes. Is it still possible to register your car with side pipes or do you need to install an under car system and retro fit side pipes later?

Luke,

I dont believe you can register a Cobra with working side pipes so its a mod you will have to do afterwards.

If you want good down low torque a good under gar system is better(much)than side ppipes for a NA engine. Nothing sounds as good as side pipes though. And if you put a blower on it dosent really matter as you will have more torque than you need

Phil
