According to the age of my car the engineers report states that it had to comply to 98db but I think they are a bit more than that.
Here is a rough sketch of the internals of my side pipes.

I think the pipes must have had a lot of scourers stuffed in them for rego.

Mine has 2'' tubes from heads to collector then has 3.5'' straight pipe from collector to sidepipe tip. Although she does have one of those vortech cone thingys in each pipe just behind the collector. Lets just say I can almost wake the dead a half mile from the graveyard.

Kanga, have a look at my gallery and it shows what they look like! Basically cutom headers into 4 into 1 collector then 4 inch external tube with 2 inch internal perforated tube with stainless and fibreglass matt surrround then back into 3 inch. I think? Straight through jobby... I am going to need to make a few small adjustments!

Just remember that it is not that bad getting done for being to loud by the establishment but getting court with no cat converters will seriously wreck you day!

I've heard fines of up to 10k may apply if your found not to have cat converters

For the minimal impact cats have on performance I think it's wise to run them. They do act as a muffler too, taking some of the "raspiness" out of the exhaust note, which to me is a bonus.

Under car with one muffler each side (look like standard old holden mufflers)

For rego transfer (18 months ago), needed to meet current regs - 90dB at 3000 revs measured 1m from tip. first try @ 95 dB - replaced mufflers (new, and in stock) then came in (out?) @ 89.9 dB - they laughed and were happy.

Burble almost disappears at 100kph (very easy for cruisin'), but sounds great when floored ....

This was also mentioned over on one of the bowtie threads. In my experience with other guys, cats tend to 'mash' the noise and really help in achieving an acceptable level in side pipes.

Compression though is a real noise maker, and its difficult to quiten the 'bark' of a hi comp engine.

PhilM, is your new engine higher compression than previous?

Yes, the new engine is at 11.5:1, or close to that I do know that I asked to run on optimax fuel and we took that to the limit, and yes the exhaust note seams to be much more intense.

If you compare what a good crate motor, like the efi Roush 347 the cost was reasonable, it is the cost of upgrading everthing else that gets you!!!

Glad it is nearly done, wallet is in intensive care, and the fake amniesia is wearing thin when fielding questions from the finance depatment.

Let’s just say I started wearing earplugs while driving the Cobra long distances.

The exhaust now exits out the back of the car and I must say it's much nicer that way.

When I had the car engineered for the first time it blew 102db at the tip.
It had to be 92db 4 inches from the tip at 45 degrees at 2/3 max revs.
To get it to that I ran duel inch and five eighths exhaust with 2 commodore mufflers, four resonators and two and a half metres of chook wire jammed up the tail pipes.
From memory it blew 98db with out the chook wire. (max revs dropped to 4 grand when the wire was added).

What ever it takes, right.

Ha Ha my car was so muffled through the temporary 2 into 1 system that the back pressure had to be removed with a vacuum cleaner before it would start. It only just passed because it made high pitched whistling noises that upset the decibel meter. A larger diameter pipe would have done the job !

LOUD SIDE PIPES ARE SAFER...

As there is no temptation to use mobile phone will driving as you can't hear what the hell the other person is saying...although I suppose you could still text.

I remember cruising through the centre of the city here years ago in the old Cobra. Drove down one street and got stopped at the end at a set of lights, you could hear the car alarms wailing behind, in the mirror you could see the indicators/lights flashing on the cars I had passed, it was an amazing sight. Doesn't happen anywhere else, the tall buildings echo/enhance the noise.
