Default Hi Everyone

Hi Guys , Richard Ferrett new to Club Cobra. Looking for Dimensional Drawings for Cobra Chassis Frame to fabricate myself to start a new personal project .
This would be just what I need to sink my Welding and fabrication skills into.
Any pointers to the right people would be appreciated .

Richard--check out the Scratchbuilders forum. ther are a lot of guys there doing builds--check with Aussie Mike- he's in Melbourne, and is doing a beautiful job with his frame. There are several other guys there doing scratchbuilt frames and can help you find what you need. welcome aboard.

Richard

Many years ago Rob Baker, one of the founding members of the Cobra car club built both a body and his chassis from scratch.

Rob now lives in Mornington, Victoria and works for the Ambulance service. Someone may be able to give you some clues on how to contact him. Or ring the ambulance service and they may assist.

alternatively try CS.

He may draw one up on a glove box for you for $100

Hi Richard, theres a guy in Adelaide that built his frame from drawings and even owns the mould to the body of his 289 replica which he bought years earlier. Its a great build with round tubing frame, wire wheels, 289 grill and British Racing Green in colour. If you want to talk with him let me know and Ill track down his number for you.

Regards

Ph. 0407 80 70 60.

Hi Richard,

There are a couple of factor to take into account when building your own chassis. I thought about doing my own intially but ended up buying a kit.

The chassis is a relatively inexpensive part of the kit. Most kit manufacturers that supply seperate body/chassis supply the body for around $6K-$7K and the chassis for $3K-4K. There might only be $500 worth of steel in the whole thing but most of the headaches with geometry are taken care of. More importantly with the kit chassis you get an engineers report on the torsion and beaming results which is required as part of your final engineering report. If you are building your own chassis this is something you will have to foot the bill for when it comes time to engineer your car.

In the end I figured it wasn't worth the effort to build my own chassis. Whilst it would be fun to do with the way the rego laws are down here there wouldn't be a lot of money saved doing it yourself. I've had plenty of fun modifying my kit chassis to how I want it anyway.

The other thing to think about is when it comes time to sell the car a known reputable manufacturer is probably going to fetch more than a back yard built car. Your engineering may be much better than any kit but the new owner only has your word and what he can see looking under the car. This may turn prospective purchasers off.

Come by one of the Cobra club meetings and have a chat with some of the people who have built cars and are still building.

Cheers

Aussie Mike

Mike,

Damn, I think your right the kit way is certainly ther better way to go. I can recal Rob Baker saying it was a headache and took up all of his garage fllor for months.

Of course I'm still building. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if it was finished.

Cheers
