Hi Richard,
There are a couple of factor to take into account when building your own chassis. I thought about doing my own intially but ended up buying a kit.
The chassis is a relatively inexpensive part of the kit. Most kit manufacturers that supply seperate body/chassis supply the body for around $6K-$7K and the chassis for $3K-4K. There might only be $500 worth of steel in the whole thing but most of the headaches with geometry are taken care of. More importantly with the kit chassis you get an engineers report on the torsion and beaming results which is required as part of your final engineering report. If you are building your own chassis this is something you will have to foot the bill for when it comes time to engineer your car.
In the end I figured it wasn't worth the effort to build my own chassis. Whilst it would be fun to do with the way the rego laws are down here there wouldn't be a lot of money saved doing it yourself. I've had plenty of fun modifying my kit chassis to how I want it anyway.
The other thing to think about is when it comes time to sell the car a known reputable manufacturer is probably going to fetch more than a back yard built car. Your engineering may be much better than any kit but the new owner only has your word and what he can see looking under the car. This may turn prospective purchasers off.
Come by one of the Cobra club meetings and have a chat with some of the people who have built cars and are still building.
Cheers
