Hi everyone, this is my first message. Had the dream for a long time but time constraints dictated that it stayed a dream. Decided to get off my backside and make it happen. I originally decided to build a kit, then to buy a complete car and am now possibly back to a kit. I have the opportunity to aquire a partially completed kit in the local nth Qld area. The kit is a RCM 1990 model. I have spoken to the local (Townsville) engineer about passing the ADR's etc and he seems to think that it will not be a problem (the cars age) as long as the engineering calcs stack up. I am going to have a look at it over the christmas break. Any comments or words of wisdom. This will be my first project of this kind and am obviously a babe in arms at the moment.

Hey Hodson, I know of about 5 Cobra replicas in Townsville. I know most of the owners and could put you in contact with a few of them. Don't know of any RCMs in your area but I do know three completed DRBs and 2 kits in building.

Be careful what engine this second hand kit has as it may be useless due to ADRs. And be careful you are not buying someones elses problems. All the blokes on this site (except 1 or 2) are excellent fellas who will help as much as possible.

Actually buy the dam kit and finish it so I can have another Cobra in the local area. God knows when I get pulled up by the COPS I need to blame 'that other blue and white cobra' that is always hooning!

hodson, Blairs advice is spot on.

The RCM should have no problems as far as chassis engineering. It would only be any engine the seller wants you to pay for that may be a problem.

Check with your engineer before parting with cash for any engine the seller wants to sell you.

Also do an advanced search on the Australia Forum in here and you'll get heaps of threads to read.

and.....

Take no notice of that Blair fella....his car wont be fast enough to pull the skin off a custard.

Not till he gets it going that is.

LOL,

I love you REBEL1.

Maybe I should also explain my answer as well. When I was looking for a kit I looked at a partly built RCM around the Townsville area. Not knowing much at the time (not much has changed) the owner wanted me to buy the whole kit and engine from him! All I know is the 302 which was already dropped into the chassis and body would not pass todays ADRs. Probably a totally different Cobra, but make sure you do you're research.

As for this REBEL1 and his custard joke . . . uummm REBEL1 I have told you a thousand times 'NO I will not take my TOP OFF'!

Nassty & All,
Thanks for the info, this car has comes with 3 engines, 302, 351 & range rover engine. all I suspect will not pass ADR's. My understanding is that if you run them on LPG they will pass the ADR's. Is this correct? I would lioke to install a 351 coupled to a 5 speed manual box. Any info would be appreciated. My email is colinh@divebell.com.
Blair, the contacts for the other Cobra owners in Townsville would be fantastic. I have seem a couple floating around and have a dribble everytime I see one.

hodson,

I'll send you an email for contact details of RCM. With regards to engines and ADR's you need some local advice. While ADR's are a national set of standards, the states may have their own requirements as to what engine you can use. Qlder forum users will be more helpful than I. Best bet is to talk to an engineer first to find out exactly what you can use. As for chassis tests etc that your engineer will need, you can get these through the engineer that RCM uses. An RCM has no problems passing the required tests in Vic. Again, you'll need to check with a local engineer in Qld but I don't think you'll have a problem as my engineer has told me that's it's one of the better chassis's that he's tested; his words, not mine

cheers and happy Christmas

Hey Blair, do you know Clive Payne? He built a Paul Wooley kit in Canberra some years back and was then transfered to Townsville. He's an Army chopper loadmaster. I think he painted it green with stripes.

Say g'day for me if you see him.

Hello David, uummm, don't know of a green Cobra with white stripes in Townsville, but I do know of a green Cobra with gold stripes in Townsville. Really nice car, but I have never actually been able to catch the guy. I was told by others it was a Wooleys kit.

Might have to track old mister Payne down. Get a Far North Queensland 'Nationals' going. 400hp in the wet sounds interesting!

Blair, that would be him. I recall now the stripes being gold. He had the TAFE up there paint it for him.

There's abit of a trick with STANDARD un-modified engines on gas...your engineer is going to get a headache.....be good to him. This info is most probably old hat now but it's another avenue to look down. good luck.

Mmmm forgot to comment on that terrible sunny weather you guys have there - for most of the year...

.. is RCM Laurie's kit from Victoria?.

If so, Laurie would be an ideal first call. He's very approachable...for a Victorian..

Cheers
