DRB - Oil Filter touching subframe
Hi,
I am using the recommended Z10 oil filter (engine 302W) however it is touching the Torana subframe. I had to drop the back of the engine as far as it would go just to get it on, it then touches when I put the engine back to its normal position.
Is this normal ? Should I be looking at a remote filter setup or possibly an adaptor I have seen that turns the filter 90 degress to the front of the engine? With this adaptor however it looks like it will foul my mechanical fuel pump....
Cheers,
Dan

Filters
HI Dan,
The 302 usully runs a Z9 filter. I had clearance problems with mine and have fitted a Z89A, similar to the Z9 but shorter.
Not a fan of remote mounting the filter, it is just more connections and more opportunity for leaks.

Hi Phil,
The z10 and z89 appear to be identical in size. Just checked the Ryco site and is says the z10 has been superceded by the z89a.
Looks like I need something about 10mm shorter or lift the engine up a fraction.
Cheers

Not to sure on your situation (torana & 302 + Z10) but my DRB with a 4.6 and a standard oil filter there was no way I could even put the oil filter on! Actually if you look closely in the attached pics even with a remote oil filter setup the torana 'sub frame' had to be notched so that under hard driving conditions the sub frame would not hit the remote setup.

I think the remote idea is a good 1 if your carefull with the conections leaks wont happen.those nice an fittings are pricey but well worth the investment..

Yeah, that's normal...on Torana based DRB's you've got to use the shorter filters. Z9 won't fit.
From memory we used to use a short Fram filter.

Looks like a remote mount is the way to go, looks good Blair, that engine sure is a tight fit.

Hi Dan,
Yesh.....I could not get my engine in with the filter on.
I went remote. The windsor has more room for the remote connection than Blairs Gigantor block so fitting is pretty easy. Whilst you are putting the remote filter in it is a good time to decide whether or not you are going to have an oil cooler.

Sounds like a perfectly good excuse to fit a LS1 to me

Ive got a DRB running a remote filter set up.
works good had no problems.it's actually easier to change the filter
and its mounted inside the left hand gaurd.
