Lucas tail lights, my latest efforts
During the last week or two I have been modding the rear of the chariot.
I have fitted LED reversing lamps and early Lucas tail lights. They where suprisingly simple to fit, unlike anything else I do. To begin with I cut out the holes required to mount the tail lamps so they mounted in the centre of the raised tail light section with the top of the lamps about 30mm down from the top of the body section. With the lights fitted I drew an outline of the lights with a greylead pencil, removed the lights and got destructive with a flap disk in the grinder. Once the shape was about right, hand sanding was required and after a couple of hits with spray putty and a bit more rubbing to get rid of air bubbles they have come up quite well. The body on the CRs is quite thick around the lights and there is no need to fill behind the lamps on my body at least:rolleyes: http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMAGE_029.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMAGE_031.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMAGE_050.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMAGE_044.jpg |
Oh and yes the brake light will get fixed down properly

Lights look excellent Gav - did Paul send you those sample lenses? :D I was thinking an E-mark branding iron would do the trick :p |
Hi Gavin,
the lights look great. Youve done a great job to get them to sit on the body so nicely. Regards. |
Looks great to me
|
Thanks for your comments guys,
Andrew, No they are stock Lucas lights. I'll just fit trailer lights for rego and throw them back on. I will wire the brakes to flash like an old yank tank. Retro LED reverse lights, old tail lights am I confused? The brake light will get thrown off after rego. |
Excellent work!
Great job Gav, tail lights look great. Did you modify it like we discussed?
|
No I didn't Stef, I couldn't locate the LED indicator lamps you spoke of.
I have kind of talked myself into flashing brake lights now though. Gav |
Gav they look great.
I was looking at the rear of mine the other day and was thinking how plain the Lucas L691 type looked so plain. Why is it most of the aussie replicas we use the round types instead of the originals such as yours? Leeroy |

Looking great! Just wondering what reversing LED's you are using? |
The lights are a Hella LED numberplate light which I have pulled out of the housing.
They are a clear moulded two LED lamp which requires a 16 x 50 mm slot to mount flush in the body, $42 each inc GST. Gav |
Leigh,
Its because only a few of us are genuinly talented. I may not spell well, but talented all the same:D |

Leeroy, Lucas L691/692 were also "original", though not used on S/C's and I believe all but the last handfull of COX prefixed 427's. AC Cars used them on thier "Sports 289" which was a norrow rear 427 body with a 289. Besides the fact that the L542 is all red, only has one bulb, not E marked and totally unacceptable to rego authourities, I feel the L691/692 gives good light output for all those following you in traffic who may not be paying proper attention. But then the authourities don't like side pipes either. I have followed Cobra's that have the smaller round glass lamps L488 or 594 and they are useless in the sun and barely visable at any other time but night. |
Good point David on the visibility of the rear lamps. I have followed mine and it certainly is easy to see braking & turning signals.
Rear ended in cobra sounds costly. ps/ Gav you spellin is reds purfeckt to mea ! |

 And modest :) I like my round ones %/ (and I like square ones too) Ive got 6 clear lenses Im going to put on - are clear ones legal for rego ? (with appropriate coloured bulbs) http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...8375_1_1_1.JPG |
I used the clear ones for the inicators with orange globes with no hassles.
By memory Justbetter has clear for both brake & indicators Think your indicators are to be below the brakes also ;) |
haha - OK - Mine are off now. Ill make sure I put them the right way round next time :D
Yeah I reckon Garrets indicators look great all clear. |
I've got the L691s on mine. Red and yellow on the back and clear on the front. I'm running LED globes all round and they are super bright.
I reckon it wouldn't be hard to put an LED globe in those rectangular Lucas lights. You would have to change the bulb mounting a bit because the LEDs are very directional. As for turn indicators, how about some of those reversing lights you've got but fitted with orange LEDs. They could be placed in the rear panel at the same height as the reversing lights but spaced out wider. Cheers |
I could be very easily talked into retro fitting the lamps to LED and including a flasher if I can get my mits on the right lamps to do it with.
I will have to dig a bit deeper I think. Do you think LED side marker lamps would be bright enough? Anyway I'm onto trying to come up with a handbrake arrangment now. I have discovered that since I'm using an auto that the MG style of handbrake will not be able to fit as the box is too wide. A desicion needs to be made as to where the handbrake lever will be positioned, and the jury is still deliberating. Gav |
Hey Mike do the clear / amber 691's have the right category numbers or front rear?
I'm planning to have the same on mine but I've a suspicion they aren't strictly correct. What are the codes above/below the E stamp? Oh and any luck on wiring diagrams? Cheers |
