Default Turn it up, Bring the noise!

Hi All,

I'm furiously trying to get my car ready for Shelby Fest. If I don't set myself some goals I'm never going to get this car done. This week end I decided to put the car into race track trim.

Winton will be the cars first real drive. Rolling up and down the drive way doesn't count and neither does a couple of skids in the street out front. Since it'll be it's first drive I'll be going dead slows so I figured if I'm not going to be going fast I might as well sound like I am.

To this end I pulled off the pusillanimous 87dB under body system and put the headers back on. I then knocked up a pair of shorty dump pipes. These were cut down from my original side pipes. I was planning on building a new set of side pipes as I wanted to TIG them together for a neater finish. I've also had a few new ideas I want to incorporate into them.

I'll send the headers and shorty pipes off to HPC this week to get coated. I should have them back in time for Shelby Fest.

When I fist fired it up you would have though the roof of the work shop was going to blow off. Oh My Lord it's loud! Siting in it and giving it a bit of a rev with the under body system was cool but this makes you want to jump out of the car and run inside to hide under the bed. The car seems truly frightening now.

I've still got a few jobs do do before it'll be ready. It needs a bit of body work and a coat of flat black. I've also got to finish my aero screen and the car needs a wheel alignment. I think I'll have to fit a 5 point harness too.

Hope you all had productive week ends.

Cheers

" pusillanimous "?, that'll have of heap of folks running for dictionaries.

I thought it was only folks like me who wanted to insult some-one, and not have them realise they'd been insulted, used that word.

Anyways, a post rego under car exhaust can sound really mean, but civil.

Unlike that in your pics....not civil at all

Great work Mike, I'm very jealous.
Do you now agree with my thoughts on LS1 noise?
Hopefully I can get this landscaping out of the way and start working more soon too.

God help anyone with sensitive ears at Shelby Fest.

Pusillanimous, adjective basically means Contemptibly Timmid.

Yep these pipes are race track only. I figured they would be just the trick for Friday night "Run what ya brung" drag meets at Calder raceway which is about 3KM from my house.

My parents are down visiting at the moment and I don't think I've seen my Dad frown so much.

The new induction setup is all hiding under the hood scoop. I trimmed the hole in the bonnet to fit over the air cleaner but I've still got to glass up the edges of the hole. There's about 1" to 1.5" clearance above the top of the air cleaner to the underside of the scoop. I might have to make a taller scoop at some point to improve the airflow. For the moment I'm just glad it all fit tidy.

I really Really want to get to Shelby Fest if I can. I'll be on the road again from next week till easter. I'm going to take a week off work after Easter to try and get it all together.

Cheers

The extinguisher is mounted just under the bottom edge of the dash. It's out of the way but easy to get to and pull out.

The great thing about these new side pipes is that you don't burn your leg on them when you get out of the car. And you cant hear the passenger screaming in the seat next to you.

Talking Vrrrroooooooooom!!!

Nice job Mike! That's exactly what I was going to do but after thinking it over I decided to go this route. I can only run this short set-up at a track, and in order to drive to the track I attach the regular sidepipes. It is a lot quicker to change from one to the other using this V-Band clamp setup rather than changing it at the header flange. If I were to trailer it than I would have gone with the setup you have.

The speedo goes up to 260KPH but it's a bit hard to see in this pic. It's got big and little characters on the face. I think that's probably plenty fast enough for me.

The seat is a no name brand fiberglass race seat I picked up on ebay. I bought a pair and I've cut one down into a low back already and will add a seperate head rest. Eventually this one will be cut down as well but I thougt it would be good to have a high back for the track.

The T56 fits in a treat in these cars. I reckon the only problem is they are very long @ nearly 900mm with the bell housing.

Ralph, your pipes look great. I'll have to look into the V band clamps. I've got a flange that unbolts a couple of inches inside the guard. It's a bit fiddly to unbolt the pipes here but the headers stay in place. I don't think I would get away with driving to the track even though it's only a couple of miles from my house.

Jess, I asked Jason about this a while back and he responded

Winton does have a limit, but I haven't seen it policed at any Shelby Fest.

The organisers do not impose any limit. That would go against all things 'Shelby'.

Cheers

Mike,

Last year at ShelbyFest, I drove Garretts car during the lunch break. He had his open pipes on. It was actually physically painful to drive, even with the helmet on. Make sure you have really very good earplugs. A weekend of that will cause industrial deafness.

However - What a sound

I agree Cameron, I think I'll need to pack a few sets of ear plugs in my kit bag.

Cheers

I'll put the dB meter on them when they come back from coating. I would guess upwards of 125dB

Cheers

G'Day Mike,

Good to see that things are progressing well. interesting pipes, while they will sound great I don't think that you will get any performance gains from them. I think that the full side pipes will offer better performance, I was at the dyno the other day where an LS1 was there, n/a and had small straight out exhausts after the cats. it was run up to obtain a base figure, then a full exhaust system was fitted, it gain an extra 6 kw at the wheels. plus it was a lot better on the ears! I think that the engine prefers a bit of back pressure.
