Rocker-cover racing at Shelby Fest
Some of the Interstate Shelby Fest competitors may not have herd about the Sunday afternoon Rocker cover race. Sponsored by Digtec we have trophies and a 7.3 megapixel camera for the winner.
Open to racers of all ages, this is motor racing on a budget! All you need to do is fit 4 wheels to a small block Ford or Gen 111 rocker cover and you are ready to go racing at Shelby Fest 2007.
1. The Course
a. The course shall consist of a launch incline 1.8m long, followed by a level run of 5.4m.
b. The launch incline will be divided into two lanes, each 300mm wide. The incline will be 800mm high at the rearmost part, dropping to 400mm at the 900mm mark. The front edge will be bevelled so as to provide a smooth transition from the incline to the run out area.
c. The official "Starting Line" shall be 600mm from the rear edge of the incline. An impartial mechanised starter operated starting gate will launch the cars.
d. The run out section of the course shall consist of two lanes, each 300mm wide. The lanes will be clearly marked.
e. The finish line shall be marked 6.6m from the starting line.
f. A protective soft buffer will stop the cars at the end of the track
2. The "Cars"
a. The cars shall have no power source. All motive force is provided by gravity.
b. Cars shall be based on an actual rocker cover from any small block Ford or Gen 111 V8 cylinder engine. Cars should resemble the general shape of the original rocker cover.
c. Rocker covers can be factory original pressed steel or cast aluminium or any after market cover for the two engine types.
d. Retention of the factory or modified filler neck and cap is optional.
e. Maximum length of the car to be no more than 550mm.
f. Wheel track shall be no more that 280 mm.
g. The leading edge of the front wheels must be behind the front of the rocker cover. The middle point of the front of the car must not exceed 100mm in height.
h. There is no height restriction.
i. Cars must have four wheels, each no more than 150mm in diameter.
j. Sponsorship, signage, aerodynamic and aesthetic attachments are permitted provided these remain within the length and width restrictions.
k. Maximum car weight to be no more than 4.5kg. Cars will be weighed on the official scales prior to each race. Official measuring jig will be used to check width and length. The track dimensions determine these size restrictions.

You know me too well Phil.
Wheels are in motion. I've got a race winning design in my head already.
Cheers

If Aussie Mike is at design stage.
I'll put his name on the trophy right now.
It will read "Rocker-Cover derby winner ShelbyFest 2010"

not fair!!!
what about lexus valve covers or is japanese technoligy just too fast for the US junk . i guess the fack that a lexus powered cobra won last year is a bit hard to take for all the us engine fans. Though i think most of the gen 3 engine parts are made in brazil so its US by name only.
sorry jason i could not let this one go buy without having a go.
Regards Scott.
gone fishing.

Scotty, I think where Jason went wrong was the width of the track at only 300mm.
It's rumored that japanese "things" go sideways so the track would have to be a whole lot wider.

Only 300mm wide. I guess that rules out running any Boss 260 rocker covers as well. That motor's got fat heads.
Cheers

I don't have any spare Gen3 Chev small block rocker covers. Is a Gen 1 Chev Small block rocker cover OK?
I think I've also got some big block Chev covers some where in the shed. Might have an old Cleveland cover or two lying arround.
Cheers

I'm building one. It should be ready in time. I had a dig around in my scrap bin yesterday looking for materials. You'll have to wait for pics though. Looks like it'll be based on a small block Chev valve cover. It's rectangular so a bit easier to work with.
Cheers

As a valued sponsor of the Shelby Fest we would welcome your Lexus cover.
Are you capable of building a non turboed Lexus racer. (there are some rules we can't re-write)
