Two JD cans to disassemble the packaging and four or five (or was it six ) to assemble it.

I really should have taken pictures but someone else has done the hard work for me, see here; http://www.mako.com.au/buick/hoist/
The Hoist in these pictures is very close to mine, except that my motor/hydraulic unit looks a little different. In fact, one of the pictures where they are standing under the car is about as high as mine goes currently due to my roof restriction. I can't wait to be able to get it to full height!!!

I actually assembled mine without reading the instructions, (they were at the bottom of the motor/hydraulic box) which meant I had to do a couple of things twice. I will add though, that it is quite straight forward to put together.

EDIT: I should have added that it actually took around 4 to 5 hours total for two people.

Does anybody know what the min. ceiling height should be for a cobra and an average car.

My new garage that is being built at the moment has a minimum of 3m floor to ceiling height - 10 feet.

I measured the Cobra and my Ford utility then added about 500mm for the hoist platform and clearance. Then a bit more as I was building the garage from scratch.

I have a friend who has cut the plaster board ceiling out to allow the cars screen to go up into the roof cavity. This picked up nearly 300mm - 1 foot - of extra space. This now looks like a skylight framework.

He had even considered running a 1200mm - 4 foot - skylight to give 250mm extra clearance if needed, but it fitted without that interesting/drastic modification.

I spoke with Clive today and ordered the Propak 8 the upgraded version. A little more expensive. As I previously said I was considering/on hold the Propak 7.



I also took the option of having it delivered and installed with an oil fill. This will go in once the garage is finished. Hell, that so cheap it was not worth doing myself. The charge delivered and installed was only $450 with oil included...

Found him to be easy to deal with and nothing a problem.

Damn good value when you consider the cost of adding a bay to a garage. Plus with the hoist you get a great working platform to work under the Cobra with.



Well looks like the undercarriage will now be cleanned and a full detail is on the drawing board.

Yes have no hesitation in recommending him and his product. Have a look at his site.

Is the propark 8 bigger then the 7? I spoke to Clive a couple of days ago and he mentioned the 8 but I can't remember if he said it was bigger than the 7 or just had extra features.
I have also been doing a bit of research on hoists and I have come across a couple of USA forum posts that say the Propark is not as good as other hoists. ie the Backyard buddy and Bend Pac. Apparently the propark isn't certified either. (certified by who? ,I have no idea) Now I haven' t got a price on a Backyard Buddy (still waiting on a reply to my e-mail) but I have had a price from the Aussie dealer for the Bend Pac HD 9ST. $4700 AUD plus delivery from Brisbane, which is about $220 to Newcastle. This price doesn't include casters or jack tray. I can't find my bit of paper with prices at the moment but from memory the caster kit was about $600 and the jack tray was about $300 which I though was a bit steep. The bend pac does have a list of various standards that it complies with though.
Funnily enough, all the hoist companies in the US claim that their product is "the best on the market" etc etc.

Get a used rotary lift. A mid 80's version. Look around they are usually $1,000. I got mine with asymetrical arms for $500. I put new locks and cables in it. I had it for a total of $860! I installed it myself

I contacted Direct Lift for pricing and the propark 8 is $1850 and the 7 is $16xx. I wonder why the big difference in pricing. I thought I saw on here that the Direct lift was $4700 posted by someone.

I looked at the Backyard Buddy website and a few things didn't seem to agree with engineering design rules. Some arguments were acceptable but when they compared folded ramp sections to welded sections ( not boxed ) I reckon the product Clive is selling is OK. The pictures that Bak/Yrd Bddy is showing are of very heavy cars crashed down. There is no story of how it happened. All of the faults mentioned by Back door buddy are easily fixed.
I've put both of my cars on it and others and I'm totally confident with being underneath it. If you want to use a trolley jack on the ramp put a sheet of rubber or a hession bag or your shirt. Just to reduce a slip. I love my ramp !

Just back over here and can say that the units that I know of that have been installed have proved more than ideal.

There is no problem with Clive units at all.

The unit I have on order is delivered and installed here at my home in Australia.

No import costs or duty for me, as this is covered by the seller.

A little more in price but if you take into account the cost of import and import duty along with freight and our dollars value...

I think I paid/payed about the right price and it's installed no hassles. I just drive on.

Importantly its new and certified.

Yes I think it's great value for money and solves my storage problem along with providing a new work platform..

Ordered my Prop-Pack 7 from Clive on Monday and recieved it yesterday at 3.00 assembeled by 7.00. Very easy to put together (some parts are very heavy so 3 people will make it easier) all parts fit together well and looks very sturdy. Will post some pics later today.

While the drive ons have their use. I think they take up too much room. What is the attraction am I missing something. An above ground asym is less than half the money and you have way more access

Good to hear that it all went together well. As I said I opted to have it installed.

This was mainly due to the amount of work I'm already doing at the new place here. Just don't have the time and want to just drive the Cobra on and forget about it.
