I think Dave Samsons car sold for a respectable amount.

And that was at a time when it was ALMOST a sin to use holden/chev power.

Jees these septics always geta bit hoity toity when we talk about gm motors in the cobras.

I don't give a rats, it's the s**t stirring that's fun and hopefully the fun of testing oneself against others on the track no matter what donk they are running.

I wonder what the owner of the name "Cobra" or "Daytona" thinks about motors that are not ford in vehicles that were made famous with a blue oval motor in them. Although AC made the original vehicle, cobras and daytonas are best known as Ford Cobras and Daytonas. Have a read of the fine print on the front of the Snaketales. It says that Cobra Club has permission from the Ford Motor Company Australia to use the name "Cobra".

The question I have for you all is What if the Ford Motor Company thought that one of its famous registered names is having a motor installed almost 100% of the time (at least from 2008 in Australia) in a replica that was manufactured by its major competitor, would they withdraw their permission for the Cobra Club to use the name "Cobra"?

If anyone thinks they would not be that petty, in the weekend paper there was an article about Ford and the way they told all employees that did not own a ford or a car from one of it's other car companies it owns they were not allowed to park in the company owned car parks.

You raise a very valid point Warren, they (Ford) are probably well within their rights to withdraw approval if they so wish...

If the shoe was on the other foot, say people were fitting some "wicked Ford motor" (which, by the way seems quite unlikely ) to Torana's, I could see people arcing up. This analogy is not correct though, because Torana's were actually made by Holden/GM. If we were putting LS1's in XC Falcons I could understand.

My point here is, that MY Body/Chassis didn't come from Ford, didn't go near a Ford factory and doesn't even have one single Ford part in/on it (to the best of my knowledge)....

Just putting this question out there. Does anyone put Ford engines into Chevs/Holdens???

As for the name Cobra, can you actually "own" the name of an animal that occurs in nature? (serious question?)

I suggested a Lexus V8 or a Nissan RB30 so why not a Ford 302 for the EK? At least the distributor will be easy to get to.

That's something I didn't know. Thanks for the info. I didn't think anyplace was tuffer than California on smog and emmissions. BUMMER!

The first casualty of war is the truth.

The cobra market in Australia is too small to sustain an argument that either engine brand equates to superior return on investment.

Generally the best you can hope for is that you'll get back what you have in it if you built it yourself.

Sad and delusional arguments like this:

Clearly, were it not for the adoption by Ford of the AC body there wouldn't be anywhere near the interest in this body shape with v8 tucked in.

(stand by for the whole - oh yeah but it was Shelby and he was going to us a chev routine - pfft)

The chev crowd do have options, they could build Cheetahs - or as an alternative stick their engines in other english sports cars like Austin Healys or D or E-type replicas - or even go for a corvette - but don't.

There's nothing quite so mythical with a chev badge on it is there?

And all of this is very remote from the Daytona (replica's).

For replica cars it is a matter of compomise - for some using anything other than a 427SO is a bridge too far (you out there excalibur?), for other it has to be an FE - most of us here in Oz have to content ourselves with an SBF (and frankly are quite happy too).

Where brand alegances lie putting a chev in ford is a bridge too far.

Everyone I know that has gay relatives loves them dearly, hopes they're happy and secretly wishes they were normal.

And it certainly adds a bit of colour to family get-togethers (Nationals/Shelby Fest)
Also the opportunity for some good natured one-upmanship (so to speak )

Good luck with your lifestyle choice Stiffy.
(and since your cobra has a SBF does this make you a switch hitter?)

I love the old Ford vs Chev debate....

All I want is a lightweight car to put an LS1 in and have some fun (during the build process AND whilst driving it). I actually wanted to build an Elfin, but they won't sell them any other way than complete turnkey driveaway.

If my car had to have a Ford motor I wouldn't be building it! It would be useless to advertise LS1 tuning whilst driving a Ford powered vehicle.

I will admit though that the Cobra is one very nice looking, tough vehicle..... It's just a shame that Chev didn't take Shelby's offer in the first place!!!

Right, but he didn't take their offer. So that's all that matters.

The thing is, it would be fine to put a Chebby engine in a Cobra, but the first time someone bought a Cheetah replica and put a Ford engine in it, there would be riots all across the US.

It's the owner's car...they can do whatever they want. But I go to a lot of car shows and the number of cars with 350's and 350 Turbo transmissions just makes me puke. There is no originality with Chevy stuff and it's like the GM guys can't have any imagination. The only thing they know to do is go pull a 350 out of the junkyard, put a set of chrome valve covers on it and stick it in a car.

I understand that Chevy parts are cheap and there are millions of them, but that only adds to the sheer boredom.

I also understand that it's harder to obtain legal licensed Ford drivetrains in Aussie Land, so that's a different scenario. If you want a Cobra bad enough, you can only work with what you have available to you.

To answer your question specifically, Warren, should Ford decide it didn't like Australian Cobra Car Clubs using the Cobra name, well, I reckon the following day the sun would rise, my replica would still be registered and in my garage and life would go on much the same. Maybe I think that way because I have a Ford!

We can't do that here either mate, That motor would be no more legal than the Ford. The issue here is emissions compliance not cost.

I reckon what we are doing with our LS1, LS2 motors is pretty original with plenty of imagination.

You would be spot on there Richard, and if they said I couldn't call mine a Cobra anymore, I really wouldn't have a problem with that...

If the only thing that made these cars a Ford was the drivetrain, then I reckon mine should be called a Chevy _ _ _ _ _ (name witheld)...

I don't know...but it just gets old. Again, if only certain engines are mandated in your area, then you don't have much of a choice.

I'm just guessing here, but that last setup(photo) will not fit in a Daytona. Bummer for the retro look.

Maybe we will start calling our cars, "Kobras".
