Default Tour of Tassie

I saw an ad for Tasmanian Tourism on the tube last night and was reminded what a great place for driving that little island is. I spent a week down there in March and had a ball, albeit in a Commodore (Chebby).
I know there was a lot of enthusiasm initially for the Alice trip but it all seemed too hard for most (I'd still go ). Who would be up for a Tour of Tasmania? Say a week in February or March in 2008, terrorising cyclists (sorry Bernie ) and creating lots of noise.
The trip via boat is a piece of cake, so it's a much easier option than the Alice, unless you live in the Alice like Boxhead

Default Tassie Bonus

Rich,

I was at the Porsche Club meeting last nite and they has a 40 min video of their March 2007 Tassie Trip ( I got a bit sick of looking at bald mid life crisis men trying to look good in nice cars ,,,, sh.. I have just described myself )
Anyway I digress, they actually received a grant from Tourism tassie
to assist in the cost of the trip. They did have 40 cars
We have our fantastic Alpine Run in March and a new SA eveny organised for March 2007, how about November 2007:????? FOOD FOR THOUGHT.....

Those Porsche boys seem to be pretty good negotiators. I hear they arranged to close the Great Ocean Road for a couple of days.
Anyhow Stiffy, any month except May-October would seem like good Cobra weather for a Tasmanian trip.
I had considered going alone but it would be a blast with a big mob of snakes.

Default Sounds good,

Rich,

I have a copy of the itenary somewhere I will post it when I can.
They are a big club and are very well organised, alot of lawyers and rich people with alot of time on their hands (ex Macca's owners most of them ) that should get a bite.........

I was in Tassie for Targa this year, the locals really get behind
this event (what else is there to do ) and I am sure half a dozen Cobra's would turn them on more than 40 souped up VW'S......

Lets see who else joins the discussion and we can take it from there.

Rich,

Sounds like a lot of fun. I am taking my youngest for 4 days 1st week July and its pretty cheap to get car & self over there at moment. (cos its so cold down there at the moment) Booking is easy on net. $79 car & $70 adult at moment.

When weather improves might need to book early. Never been there yet so I will enjoy the roads (albeit in a VW not cobra ) But would like to see who else is interested as I certainly would be.

I'd like to go. My wife has often suggested we go on a driving tour of Tassie.

Cheers

I would love to come as well (Cobra or not)

I have just decided that I am going to do a round trip, Sydney - Melbourne (via the coast) - Adelaide (via the coast) - Sydney (via the Hay plain). I could always make it 2 weeks and chuck in Tassie as well. Yipee !!!

Hey there Richard, when you have approx dates sorted can you let me know.
I may not be in the Cobra but Tassie is still such a pretty place to visit, I am sure the boss (Ronda) would love a drive around it.

Well that's about 7 or 8. Not bad.
I had a look at the Bureau of Meteorology's site last night to work out the best time to visit in terms of rain and the risk of frostbite.
December would be OK and we'd beat the Xmas rush. The thought of getting stuck behind convoys of cararvans and motorhomes leaves me cold.
As far as a route goes, I reckon from Devonport we'd take a right and do an anti-clockwise lap. Strachan, Macquarie Harbour, Queenstown, across to Hobart, up the east coast and back to Devonport via a few wineries on the north coast.
Any other suggestions?
About a week should do!
Richard

I dont know if others have done a cruise around Tassie before but I have driven there alittle.
The drive from Stachan to Hobart is a fairly long one, very windy road for most of the drive and very "different" scenery around Queenstown.

I drove from Port Arthur to Strachan in the day, it didnt leave much time for sight seeing.

Bluddy Tazmania. sheez, I don't go that far for holidays.

I'll keep an eye on this thread so I can warn the residents of Strachan, Macquarie Harbour, Queenstown, Hobart, and Devonport to lock away their daughters and to close all the pubs.

Me thinks you southerners should organize a tour up here. Even just to realize what you're missing out by way of quality of life.

Mr Wazza and his groupies would put together a good itinerary for ya.

You're right, Boxhead. We did Hobart to Strachan in an afternoon. About 3-4 hours without much of a break (Port Arthur even further). I'd reckon on a stop-over somewhere though not a great deal along that road.....but what a road in a cobra. While in the Commodore all I could think of was the lines to take in the cobra!!
A Queensland tour? I went there on my honeymoon and that ended very badly....

We have been to Tassie the last two years for a holiday once in a car and last year on a bike (Hardly Goingson) and love the place.
There is lots to do if you are into great food, good wine and beer and driving in fantastic countryside.

Tie it in with Targa Tasmainia for the full experience.

Default We only need a date

Well there seems to be a fair bit of enthusiasm for a journey to where
your sister could be your Mother.....

I suggest we dont go during Targa Tassie as there is no where to stay,
the locals are more interested in their once a year fuel fest....

I think Rich and I (with help from the Vic Cobra Car Club Social Committee ) should start the ball rolling. March is busy for Vic so November would a better option. I will contact Rich to organise.
