Insurance on chassis/body
Hello,
I'm nearing the first Big Day, when the chassis/body arrives from QLD. ![Big Grin](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) I inquired about insurance and was advised to take out "restoration insurance" from Shannon's to cover transport to Melbourne and the subsequent 12 months (no doubt longer).
I'm told this is normally a few hundred dollars and should provide cover to about $25,000 in value.
No doubt plenty of people here have recently been through the process. If you have any advice, suggestions or otherwise please feel free to let me know!
Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
I don't know if you know this, but as soon as the vehicle is started to be built you own it. If everthing happens to it at the factory it is your lose. I insured mine from when the construction started at the factory. The first stage of the insurance was for $25000 and was around $300(can't remember the exact price).

Sambo
I'm paying just under $200 for $30 or $35K cover right now through Shannons under layup or in-build stage.
Your price sounds inflated but that maybe to cover the transport component as well, I don't know what risk there is to that.
Cheers

Crikey, these replies have put the wind up me. I'm jumping straight on the phone. Who would have thought that a car I haven't paid for would be mine to replace if something happened at the factory???

I first insured everthing for $25,000, then when it was all assembled I increased it to $35,000. That cost $266 through Shannons for "restoration insurance". That was while it was it the shed, transporting or anyone working on it at their workshop.

Sambo,
I have laid up cover on the Harrison through Shannons and it costs $172/year and is currently for $31,000. It is called laid up cover and covers everything except being driven on the road under its own power. Everything else i.e like trailering to repairers etc...is covered. Shannons accepted what I had spent up to the date I called and covered it for that amount. As I put more money and gear on like gauges, seats, radiator, fuel tank etc... I just ring and increase the amount covered.
cheers
Mick

Hmm, my laid up cover with Shannon's costs $375/year.
As the old saying goes, if you can't afford to lose it, insure it. ![Wink](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

I managed to get $25,000 laid up cover for $261 with a $100 excess. Not bad for peace of mind.
Schipps - I'd love to know how you got higher cover for $90 less!
Thanks for the help guys.

Price of Laid Up cover
Guys,
The explanation is simple...I live in Queensland, you Sambo, are in Victoria...
But seriously, maybe being in a regional centre of the BEST state reduces the risk???
They didn't even want photos...
regards
Mick

Hang on, my first thought is natural disasters (floods down here) but then I remembered not long ago bananas were fetching $15/kg due to cyclones up there.
I've always thought it's largely a matter of which phone operator you get and how "in the know" you sound over the phone.

I've got laid up cover for $50,000 with Shannons and it's costing me $229 per year.
I just spoke to them to find out what's covered under laid up insurance. It's covered for anything apart from moving under it's own power. So if you're transporting it to the engineer on the trailer it's covered then but when you take it off the trailer and run up and down the road doing brake tests it's not covered.
Comprehensive cover for limited use i.e less than 10,000KM per year was about $500 on $50,000 value. Pretty reasonable in my book.
Cheers

That's what they told me Mike, pretty much to the word. It's also covered in transit from the place of manufacture to home, as well as being put on and taken off the truck - I'll be using a tilt tray to get the car into and out of a furniture van, so that was important for me.

Laid up cover with Shannon's strictly states that the vehicle will not be moved under it's own power. I guess to drive it using a permit it would have to be horse drawn!
