A bit dissapointed with Vic roads yesterday. I turned up with all my ICV paperwork and they said it takes too long and they don't have time so I have to schedule another appointment with another branch. Looks like I won't be driving till Monday now.

It was partly my own fault as I was a few minutes late. Road works on the way over and then I lined up at the wrong counter.

Cheers

Hi Mike,
Hope you have better luck next week. How did you put the vin number on your chassis?

Regards.

I bought a new set of number and letter punches. The requirement is for the characters to be at least 7mm tall. The punches I had were only 5mm so I bought some that are 8mm. I tried stamping the numbers directly into the chassis bit I couldn't make a decent impression as the steel of the rails is pretty hard.

I was in a hurry so I stamped them onto a piece of aluminium and then rivited that to the chassis but they said that was no good. I'm now working on stamping them into a strip of steel sheet and I'll weld that on to the chassis.

Cheers

Yeah, VIN number needs to be permanently attached to the chassis these days. So it needs to be welded. Which is fair enough I suppose. You would laugh if you saw how we used to attach them.

The other thing they dont like is double stampings i.e when the number doesn't come out right on the first hit and you belt it again but it doesn't quite match up with the first imprint.

I think I'll make a Jig to hold the punch square. Leeroy did this and his numbers all turned out neat and even.

Cheers

Bad luck about the inspection snaffoo!

Besides being a little late Mike, what is it about their inspection process, or is it the paperwork trail, that takes so long? Surely it is only checking matching stampings for correctness as the engineer is certifying everything else??

Where did you get your tyre and engine belt configuration placards from?

Cheers
