Default Fuel tank is done

G'day all. Today I picked up a shiny new aluminium fuel tank, courtesy of Sean Mullins (Race Cars). He's done a couple of Harrison tanks in the past and I've heard good things about his work. So on Doug Pearce's recommendation I got in touch and Sean sent me a cardboard mockup of the tank, which filled the hole in my boot floor perfectly.

The tank is roughly 73L, has two baffles and the bottom edge is angled for ground clearance on steep driveways. I sent Sean a new VZ SS Commodore Crewman fuel pump which he adapted nicely to his tank design. This Crewman pump is the variation with internal swirl tank and a single fuel line to the engine - handy.











There are no markings on the fuel pump housing but I plan to open it up on the weekend and work out what it is. A Bosch perhaps?

I just recieved a radiator header tank from Shaun, and I must say I was extremly impressed with his work, his service and even more so his price.

Yeah top bloke and great value, not to mention a steady hand! Plenty of nice toys in his workshop too... a 69 Camaro body stripped and taken back to metal, a couple of funny cars, rods, etc.

Boxhead - are you able to post any pics of that header tank? Cheers.

I think your header tank was done by Shaun Mellish wasnt it David? his work is amazing.

Paul,
The tank looks good, but I have question regarding the inlet. On my tank I have the inlet and vent are coming off the top of the tank. In my boot if I had the inlet were yours is I would need to drill a hole through the side of the boot panel. This would cause me a problem as would hit the side of the muffler. As yours and mine are both Harrisons and I assume the boot panels are the same, are you going to instal the mufflers in a different spot.

Tank looks great
However I agree with Warren. To fit that tank I would need to cut a hole in the floor of my Harrison boot for the outlet pipe!!.
What guages are you using and therefore what fuel level sender.

This explains why the other tank he built had the filler neck coming from the top of the tank. He couldn't work out why they asked for it, because you'd have two bends in the filler neck and lose some boot space.

I've gone for the bigger tank so perhaps the filler inlet sits higher? If not I'll probably cut a recess into the fibreglass floor panel - easier than adapting the tank. As for mufflers... I hadn't thought of that. When I'm under there on the weekend it's certainly something to ponder.

Hopefully I'll be able to give some better answers once I've removed the brackets from the back of the diff and fitted the tank properly.

Bruce I'll probably use gauges from Howard's Instruments, which I think run VDO internals? That pump has a fuel level sender built in, so I hope my sparky can work the necessary magic between the instruments and the loom.

Bruce/Warren,

I did a trial fit tonight and you're right, I had to cut a piece out of the boot panel. Shouldn't be a problem in the long run as I plan to run side pipes with cats/mufflers and then divert the tailpipes back under the car to satisfy rego requirements. It should still look like active pipes though, if you get what I mean.

That tank does look nice sitting in there. I like the crewman pump idea.
What seats are you using (have you decided)?

Just a quick hacksaw job mate, nothing special there! I think if I don't use MX-5 seats I'll go with a custom made seat in the traditional style, with headrests of course.

With the wiring are you starting from scratch or have you bought one of those wiring kits? I've got a complete XF Falcon loom but it's going to be a lot of work adapting it to the Cobra.

On our first Cobra we actually used 2 x Holden looms. This give us enough length of appropriate colours to make a complete loom for a Cobra. A very cheap way of doing it as the looms cost only a few dollars all up.

You are lucky in a Harrison as you can run the rear loom down the sides of the body(under the doors). Engine loom was through the firewall on the pasenger side, ECU was mounted above the passengers legs. We also got smart and hid the front loom(thermo, horns, lights etc), we ran it through the front upper chassis rails. Just remember to label the chassis tubes with a warning while you are building, so you don't forget the wiring is there. We did that once, mounting the bonnet stay, not pretty.

On our 2nd Cobra we were lucky to be able to hire a box of suitable coloured cable reels off a friend. So were able to make the loom from scratch with new wire.

I found a guy in the States called ez2wire. He sold me an American auto wire 15 cicuit harness and a fuse relay harness adaptor for my motor harness. I have done the dash board and now half way through the motor harness adaption. I get the radiator on Monday and when Warwick comes back from States I pick up the windscreen.

Bruce, no fair - I'm out of cash! I'm saving for the drivetrain over the next 12 months, meanwhile doing all the cheap/fiddly stuff like fuel and brake lines, wiring, door locks, sound and thermal proofing, etc.
