Default LS1 Fan Wiring + Side Indicator

Help reqired again
When wiring the LS1 motor for a single fan (not the 2 fan set up from factory) does it matter if you use the feed from the ECM for Fan 1 or Fan 2 ie does Fan 1 come on at a different temp than Fan 2.

Also what brand/make are you using for the side indicator light. The clear lens amber light Narva and Hella lights both have ugly surround mounts. I feel like bonding the Narva directly to the body and eliminating the surround altogether.
Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

In the LS1 loom the BCM controls the low speed fan and the ECM controls the high speed fan. The BCM switches the low speed fan on when you turn on the AC etc and it also kicks on at a lower temp. The High speed fan is a backup that the ECM can turn on if things are getting a bit too hot. It doesn't come on till about 95 degrees which is a bit to hot for a regular fan.

I reccomend use the high speed fan output from the ECM . This is switched earth not switched battery like the fuel pump control so when you wire up your fan relay supply accessory or ignition battery to the relay and let the ECU provide the earth to switch the relay on.

When you get your ECU re tuned (talk to Plums) get him to drop the on temp of the high speed fan from 95 degrees to about 85 and this will work a treat. There is some hysterisis built into the high speed fan control so it's not always turning on and off. It has an on temperature and an off temperature. Set it to come on at something like 85 degrees and turn offf again at 82 or something like that. The figures Bobby and I used seem to work OK so try them.

Check out the late model Ferrari side indicators. They will probably set you back about $75 for the pair but they look great and are easy to fit and dont require any special plug.

Cheers

As Mike said, the PCM only controls the "High setting"... The standard temps are: Low on at 98 off at 95, High on at 108 off at 102.

You need to wire your fan to the PCM and have the fan temps lowered to more respectable levels.

From memory, most of the Cobra's I do are set to come on at 92 and go off at 89.

Thanks again Mike.
Dummy me. The fans setup is quite clear on the wiring diagram.
Just got the PCM back from having the VATS turned off. Looks like I need to send it back to change fan temp settings also, are there any other settings I need to change (I will go MAFless after engineering)?

They (whoever turned VATS off for you) should have done a few things for you. As a minimum, they should turn VATS off, lower fan temps, change diff ratio and tyre size in the PCM to match your actual diff ratio and tyre size.

could you not put the MAF in and just not connect the wires (or just have i switched off in the tune) - save you getting it programmed twice.

Bobby, can you program E38 ecu's yet? Just tha basics?

Cheers,
Andrew

Macloft

I used MX5 side indicators - circular and about 50m diameter from memory so modestly large but quite flat and low profile.

I made mine fit into lower rear corner of the side vent cutout and can also fit the side vents in place.

Half a thought that after engineering these lights might fall off the car with no residual trace of fitment as I made a frame that screws into the front face of the footwell to hold each bulb and light.

Cheers

Hi Macloft,
I used current model BMW 7 series side lights that I've mounted above the side vents and turned upside down.

Cheers

You can have a MAFless program and just plug in the MAF for engineering/rego...

I don't think I'll get the 6 litre software at this stage.... I don't have enough enquiries to warrant the exhorbatant cost of the software, (it's more than three times the cost of the LS1 gear).

Let's hope that price comes down Plums. I'm sure the R&D will start to pay for itself once more of the new builds move to the 6.0L to meet euro 3.

For an idea of how tunable these are, check this link. The factory 214kw was raised to 251kw with headers, a cat back exhaust and tune.

price is determned by credits

2 credits does an ls1 4 credits does a l76 and ls2

i have an ls2 and a vz v6 alloytech here for a security removal and some minor mods can easily be done wthout car or engine wiring

i have bench looms which i use for bench reprogrammng ls1 l76 l98 ecus

Im curious how this works. You buy the tuning software, and then you have to buy extra credits to tune different cars, correct? How does the software recognise the car\ecu? Once you have tuned one car, then can you then retouch the tune without having to buy extra credits? If you started with a blank ecu - does the software have a stock tune for that particular model. or can you just copy a tune off another ecu, and just upload it to a blank ecu?

Not that Im going into business tuning ECU's (I know nothing) but always wondered how it all worked.

Cheers.

The guys that write the software are very clever. Electrical PLC software can be similar in that the softare is given any number of appliacations or credits and then once used doesn't allow any more without either moneys being paid online, or aplications being removed and the credit going back to the software holder.

Trick stuff that I know nothing about!

they are what u pay not sure y but i guess as each model comes out

they then have to write and test new software to understand the new vehicle

not sure if u can put a tune n a blank ecu

i think u should be able to

but if u cant u then need tech2 from holden
i am looking at buying tech2 soon so i can specialise in diagnosing holdens

You can program a new PCM.... you just need to choose "re-write entire VCM" from the Advanced menu.

Does the ECU need to be connected to the thermos? Can I have a dash mounted switch to run the thermos without the ECU?
