Sideshow, what are the "problems with the throttle and the fans" on the E38 that mentioned above?

sorry cant tell

as these are problems we have encountered and solved

the problem is 99% of tuners suck the tune out modify it and push it back in that works well on a std car say a late model commodore

but when it comes to conversions and stuff some tuners dont take other things into account

i have just spent today doing research for bazs cobra with the l98 and 6 speed tip tronic

the guys that sold him the engine and parts really didnt have much of an idea on whats involved

they sold him wrong wiring harness and i have just found alot fo other stuff will need to be wired up just to get the tip tronic to work

anyway this info doesnt grow on trees so i am always causious to what i hand out

especially on forums because most people try to do things themselves then when they stuff up they then want info for free

see getting things to work is easy but if there is a slight problem 99% of people have no idea on how to diagnose stuff this is esepcially true for most mechanical shops

Haven't got my engine yet! I'm moving house in December so the L98 will arrive soon after that. I do have the pedal and a few other driveline parts though.

ok no worries then.. just make sure when you get your loom done and also tune that the tuner knows what they are doing... As previuosly stated there are a lot of good tuners out there but there excelence/expertise seems to stop at only tuning a standard car to something better... as soon as it requires either a blank ECU to be tuned or even changing some of the settings in there that are often left standard they are baffled. We have be testing our ECU's on 3 particular setups (2 x Boats and S/C Patrol) for quite sometime and now have it all sorted (was very frustrating/painful to get to this point)...

guess main thing out of this is make sure the tuner is clued up on all the tricks E38 and LS1 are 2 very different beasts!

I can tell you what I know....(which aint that much)

My understanding, is that are issues with intermittent throttle operation, or not opening 100%, and also incorret fan operation (staying on all the time I think is the common one Ive heard of)

Not 100% sure of the problem, but mine appear to be working OK, so I suspect my tuner has got it pretty right. Interestingly my ECU came with a stock L98 tune in it, and the throttle stuff was fine (he overwrote everything else with a custom L76 tune). I also supplied him with 2 other ECU's that had a stock L76 tune, and they caused some throttle issues (which he was able to fix) - so maybe they fixed the ETC control between the L76 and L98?

Justin and Sidey are right - a lot of tuners dont have much conversion experience. Ive been very happy with my guy though, very willing and able to help out with any questions, and fine tune as necessary FOC, plus if he doesnt know the answer, he has a hotline to the EFI live gods as he is a distributor.

Sounds like a case of "the more you learn, the more there is to learn" - or similar. You guys are all in Sydney though... can recommend a good tuner in Melbourne? PM me if you prefer.

The key is to getting the ECU right in the first place... then any one who tunes it will be fine with it. Is your engine going to be mostly stock.. except for pipes and intake ? If so i can recommend a tuner in sydney to get your ECU from ... in melbourne not to sure... there are hundreds to choose from but getting it right in the first place is the problem.

I reckon the stock L98 with a good exhaust and mild tune will be enough for a while. Feel free to PM me those details, thanks.
