Nutsert Tool

Hello wise Sages,

I have seen and heard the wonders of nutserts and so have made some enquires about getting a nutsert tool. So far the cheapest one I have found is $285. It does from sizes m4 to m12. Quality seems OK.

Can anybody who has a nutsert tool recommend a brand or type and suggest a price range. I'm finding it a little hard to research the tools and dont want to spend the $ only to find out I got a dud.

Just did a search on ebay and found a kit for $100 USD plus $42 USD postage does 4 to 8 mm. Looks small like my rivet tool which would be good for getting into small spaces. The tool I saw at a local tool supplier for $285 was big with handles like a big pair of bolt cutters.

Cameron, I'm in the same boat - about to purchase but still researching. Who is the "local tool supplier" you mention? I'm going to check them out on the weekend at Cost Less Bolts and possibly Coventry Fasteners (both in Melbourne) if they have them. We should try and get a deal on two.

I tried a couple of places in Dandenong. Cant remember the name of the place that had one (not a chain). I tried Coventry fastners, the bloke there said that they do sell them but he did not have any in stock. Pretty sure he said it was $300+

A couple of pics of my Nutsert tools, I got them from 'Coventry Fasteners' in Perth, from memory the blue one was about $95 and the big one was about $65
but they were trade prices. They are very handy and make things look very professional. Good luck in your search.

Try this place out, they had the best price and quality when i was looking http://www.aerobolt.com.au/Products/Tools/Tools.shtml. The one I bought was MFX612 S it works like a ratchet, if your doing M6 - M12 this the tool you want, if your doing M4-M6 you can just use the rivet plier type. I have used this tool for about 3 years now without issue, the same tool from Wurth at the same time was about twice the price.

This is the same as the unit I am useing.

I was recently at the store where I bought the tool and I asked about them, I was advised they are no longer being made, and I couldnt get any of the screw in tips for it.
I was also told not to go much bigger than about M8 as far as size goes, the tool cant handle much bigger.

It has been very handy for the M4 stainless steel allen head bolts I used on the scoop, also most of the smaller bracketry I have used M6 bolts.

Steve, I called Aerobolt and had a chat about the MFX612 which is a ratchet style tool for $440 ex gst. It cover the range M6-M12 inserts. I doubt I will need to go that big, so he suggested the KJ21 ($250 ex) which isn't on their website but it covers the range M3-M8 and works more like a conventional rivet gun. The bigger unit is made in the USA while the KJ21 is made in Italy - either way it's not China! I think I will order the KJ21 to give me access to the smaller end of the scale. Anyway thanks for the info.

I contacted them a while ago to get a shipping quote - they came back with $43USD... this makes the total deal around $165AUD delivered to your door.

Highly reccoment this particular product. It is OEM Factory approved at GM dealerships. Many have the complete (Huge selection of drills, taps, and inserts) on hand for for inframe repair. Works excellent for aluminum or cast iron.

Rick, to me the minimum length for the inserts looks like 4mm. I'm not sure that would that be suitable for sheet metal or fibreglass. Perhaps it's more for repairing engine blocks, heads, etc?

Here is a quick solution if you are not putting in too many nutserts or don't want to spend the money. I use the same tool harrymac uses bought from Coventry Fasteners.

I was thinking you wanted to repair threads in a casting. My oversight. As far as the 2 wrench mode, it will work if done carefully. Some of the kits have a hex shaped tool with a serated nose that keeps the insert from spinning while a hex wrench tightens a screw that neatly collapses the insert sandwiching the parent metal.

Did some more research today.

Hand tool (looks like rivet gun) good for 3mm to 6mm mild steel or aluminium, not real good for stainless steel as most of us dont have the hand strength required. Prices vary from $100 [All Tools in South Dandenong] to $200 [Blackwoods]

Ratchet tool (slightly bigger than the hand tool). This one uses a ratchet action so can do up to 8 or 10mm and is OK for Stainless in smaller sizes.
Starting at $500 [All Tools]

Long handle tool (Bloody long like big bolt cutters) These would be easy to use and the one I saw can do 4mm to 12 mm. But they are big so forget about getting into small spaces. $285 from U2 Industrial Supplies in South Dandenong.

Air Tool Air is obviously going to be good. Starting around $1000.
