Dash layout
Hi all
Ive got my gauges now and are trying to work out the best layout for them. Any ideas/pics would be great. |

Alffie - not sure if your using Ians dash - with the smallish gap between the column shroud and the cowl, I found it hard to make room for any smaller gauges as per the period correct SC layout - so had to compromise and put both smaller ones to the right of the wheel.

Here's mine.

Scale them up to the right size using photoshop or whatever and print them out and glue them to some card board. Cut them out and stick them on with blue-tac in different layouts till you find one you are happy with. I think there is a dash picture in my gallery, not sure how to do the link to it here. But space is an issue running modern column shrouds and steering wheels.
Didn't want to lose the vision of my good gauges to the right hand side of the column, in that dark space next to the door so, like tenrocca the two large gauges next to each other and the five small in the middle. Depends on the look you like and what you want to achieve. Functionality was one of my wants, so a gauge tucked away in a hard to see spot just wasn't what I wanted. I printed out a number of layouts and studied them till I had a prefered option. Another trick I did was to photograph the gauge faces, print out to size match the actual gauge diameters and then just layed them out in my preferred patterns. If you can do this on an insitu blank dash, you will be as close to actual as you can get. A bit of work I know but then you wont be disappointed later. Here is mine, The gauges are not centred in any way, I wanted to be able to see all clearly from the drivers seat.

Alfie Wazza's contribution will get your head spinning but at least you can see options. A critical factor to take into account is the size of your gauges. The dash space isn't huge in these cars so getting a full set of large diameter gauges can be tight. Some of Wazza's images seem to show all gauges easily placed but I am betting the larger tacho/speedo gauges are only 80mm diameter rather than say 100mm. Most small gauges are 50mm anyway I also went for the fully infilled dash to give me more space and the very large vacant space shown in Letsboogie's pic of my dash is to accomodate a stereo down the track. However all my gauges are visible as well, again a functionality issue I wanted to achieve. More food for thought. |
My Autometer guages are huge. The tacho and Speedo are 125mm and the smaller guages are about 68mm in diameter. That's why I'd reccomend printing out fullsize pics of the guages and sticking them on in different layouts. What looks OK in a drawing may not work when you actually start drilling holes.

I've just picked up my dash from the trimmers and I'm quite happy with the job that he has done. I still have to fit the warning lights, switches, glove box lock and ignition.
