Les, that's brilliant. Which make/model of recorder do you have? I've "copped" it a few times before after being intimidated by the officer and I'm thinking a recorder might pay for itself in the long run.

I have a couple but my favorite is a Sony M 800-V .

Records for up to 4 hours at slow tape speed but has an excellent Omni Mic built in or can use an external body worn micro mic.

Can tape a whisper at 5 mtrs with excellent clarity.

How many kph (PUHLEASSE MPH) do you have to drive over the posted speed limit in order to warrant the car being taken?

In Hawaii going 30 mph over the posted limit, or, over 80mph anywhere, is a VERY serious offense. In fact SO serious a judge won't hear the case unless you are represented by an attorney. 6 month suspended license plus JAIL time plus hefty fine are likely.

2nd gear is 85 mph for me, I'm just getting warmed up at that speed...

I carry mine around in what looks like a mobile hanging off my belt. I use the optional extended mike off my shirt lapel......every-one thinks it is a mobile phone mic. Mind you, It is in constant use in my job so I don't leave the house without it.

Our main use is for personal protection. We spend a huge amount of time with female clients in private surrounds. The recording of everything that is discussed is reviewable for later assessment and also allows record should any harassment accusations be made.

If pushed the right way these sort of heavy handed laws could swing election results. I would imagine that all car enthusiasts would see these laws as a threat to their hobby regardless of how they drove. Add the number of enthusiats up in the country and I reckon there would be a fair percentage of the voting populace.

Consider the lagal age to vote is 18 and that's the same age you can obtain your licence so it goes that virtually all your car owninging enthusiasts are voters. With the right organisation backing the car enthusiasts significant political pressure could be applied to the government. How many people turn up to the Sumernats each year, how many people read Street Machine or any number of motoring publications. That's hundreds of thousands of people.

I think if enough peoples cars get confiscated then there is going to be a backlash.

I don't see these laws as a threat to my hobby at all.
I doubt that many Aussie Cobra owners (well some exceptions) should feel at risk.
For what it's worth, anyone doing burnouts on public road SHOULD have their car confiscated. Plenty of fun to be had while obeying the law

I don't intentionally hoon either and rarely even speed. Haven't even had a camera fine for more than 7 years. I really dislike seing some idiot in in a POS Commodore doing a single wheel burnout across an intersection.

My problem with these laws is that they could be abused by an officer that has an issue with the driver he's pulled over. What determines Hoonish behaviour?

I also see large bilboards with a 1800 number to report hoons. What's to stop someone who is jealous of your pride and joy reporting you for some hoonish activity you haven't done just to be spiteful?

No I don't want to see Hoons on our streets but with laws like these you could be labeled a Hoon and have your car confiscated for accidentally breaking traction when pulling away from the lights (dusty or oily surface etc).

I have a problem with the authorities attitudes towards car enthusiasts. I've seen several instances where police are intentionally targeting gatherings of cars because it's an easy result. They are always going to be able to find something wrong and issue tickets. They seem to have trouble differentiating between groups of enthusiasts and groups of street racers and put us all in the same boat.

The media is partly to blame. Every time there is a fatality that involves street racing they report it as Drag Racing wihich is a perfectly legitimate motorsport and probably one of the safest in the world.

The Hoons deserve an arse kicking but the rest of us responsible drivers shouldn't lose our freedoms because of them.

And therein is my problem with the law. If you read the previously posted addy to the act any police officer can make the allegation. It is then up to you to spend dollars with solicitors etc., go to court, and even if you win in court...you have still lost.....and, that can happen even if you weren't driving the car at the time but you own that car. ( In the case of you lending your car to your son/daughter)

The copper has put you to a lot of hassle and inconvenience to get your car back.

If you think the police will be fair in any situation you find yourself in then you are a fool.

There are heaps of great police officers, but they are only human and suffer the same emotions we public suffer....and they have bosses who respond to snotty nose politicians.

The problem is they have the authority to enforce their desires....even if wrong.
