How long did it take to build your Cobra?
I think i am up to 8 years now.  Hopefully only less than a year to go now. Finally making some real progress!
How long have you taken to build yours?

HOW LONG ? man you are going gang busters. 6 years, twelve months ?
How about 10+ years. I've forgotten the exact start. I was in the last stage of completing a 9 year restoration of a 71 Mach 1 Mustang when I heard of the sale of RMC cobra ( there were only a couple of decent cobra manufacturers then ) so I bought one. It sat dormant for two years then...I nearly got married. Since then I have been building the car completely by myself. I can't believe the things that have hindered my build. Deaths, pollution requirement changes,rego,floods, job changes and the latest is my shed has sunk and to repair that I can't proceed with the cobra work !
Someone said that I have a lot of patience.
I think they were right.  |

The first Cobra I built with my brother took about 18 months to build.
The 2nd Cobra took just over 6 months. No paint required on this one. On the first Cobra we spent months on body work and then a month or so at the painters.
Merv, 6 months is a very quick build if you are only doing it in your spare time.
Actually 12 months is a great achievement in my books.
It's just the way we get supplied and build the kits here. Plus for a lot of us life gets in the way of build at times.
We are hoping to build my brothers RCR-40 in about 4 months in our spare time. That's a quick time frame even for an RCR GT40.

I didn't keep track and glad, I can't tell you the number of times I would finish building a part, step back, take a long hard look then disassemble and start over. It was all worth it, excessive HP and torque, never had her on a dyno and don't need too, feels like your riding on rails, stops straight and quick and hangs onto corners like glue (depends on tires of course). I couldn't be more pleased.

My 6 month build plan was based on a planned retirement. Well that turned into a later retirement and then semi-retirement (80%) and then my wife decided we should do up the old Queenslander for sale and then....
I still think that 12 months is on the cards. With luck the wiring will be done in the next few weeks and then the motor arrives and then lots of fettling and painting in October-November hopefully. I may however, regret these words!

What do you mean when talking about building one or assembling one ?
To meet ADR requirements for pollution I assembled the thing in about 8 months. To build it properly I have taken ages. |

Rob, you are spot on! So many annoying things get in the way, like divorce. Having kids, selling and buying houses, landscaping houses, renovating houses, tax bills also add to the waiting time!! Sometimes it is so tempting to not pay the mortgage and drain the company cheque account!! i think it would be a bit squeezy for 6 of us to live in the Cobra if the house got repossessed though.

17 months from body on frame to drivable (engineerable) no paint.During that time probably spent a good 4 months out of the country. Done 98% myself including wiring .
Got a 7 days cover for unregistered car today and drove it to garage with my son in the passengers seat (needed him to check things where going OK)Wnat a buzz  .
Now going to ship it to Texas USA show them what a real (RH drive) Cobra looks like.

Just get it done.
To beat the changing ADR requirement, and due to the late delivery of the body and chassis, we had our Cobra doing it high speed brake tests at Oran park in 6 weeks.
It was all preped though all the parts were ready engine wheels etc when the chassis arrived.
The car was fully engineered in about 3 months.
However the car was assembled to satisfy the engineeer, nothing more but possibly a few things less.
It then took 4 years to build it how I wanted it, but I did get to drive it while the rebuild was on.

Took me (& four very good friends) a total of six years. Wanted to be finished sooner, but in those six years, bought a new house, got laid off and had some serious health issues in my family. Life does get in the way.
The important thing is, it's done now & I'm having a blast with it!

I did lose virtually 12 months with a dodgy mechanic though.
