Sambo, billet rocker covers, are you trying to go for the nice clean look that Tenrocca has achieved.

Yes, John's Cobra has had quite a few suspension changes front & rear. Plus we originally built it a bit different than the norm to start with. The Cobra is faster than ever at the moment. I guess it will up for sale soon or dressed up, de-tuned and made into a street car.

Yes mate, after looking at that "302 in situ" thread I'm really envious of the oldschool look. Relocating coil packs is a good start, followed by some dressy rocker covers and whatever else can be done to help. These non-carby engines will never look as good though...

The advantage of the LS7 is it is factory so it passes emissions etc and MVR/RTA are happy for it to be regod. Putting a big cam and heads on any engine to get the power can cause a lot of greif with rego if they dont like what youve done. When you look at the prices, by the time youve done the mods it wont work out much cheaper at all.
Phil would have spent the best part of 15k on his engine to get similler hp numbers as the LS7 but will not pass rego now. One question off topic, do you guys have to go over the pits every year? How do you keep them regod with the engine mods?

I suppose I should have started the post with what I had and the outcome I was wanting.

I have a new 6 Litre 6 speed from WASP. The car will go through rego
as is. Then I will add the cam/heads while painting the engine bay and getting Aussie Mike to mod the gearbox.

I want the all singing all dancing idle sound.

I hope that sorts things out...

You can have that with your stock 6 Litre. Just back the idle down to about 500-600RPM

Even that won't do it, stock auto's idle at 550 and they idle silky smooth....

You just need a small cam, say 244/248 @ .050 on 111 LSA with around .630 lift...... That should make the idle dance a bit!!!

There is some good aftermarket dry sump setups for the LS series motors. This setup from ARE is what the Motec Daytona Coupes run. Probably a better system than the LS7 setup.

ARE Dry Sump

They can be setup with an external scavenge pump with 1,2,3 or 4 scavenging feeds/stages to pull oil from the sump and one pressure pump to feed the motor.

The Daytonas use the external scavenge pump and retain the stock factory gyrotor pressure pump. This is probably the ideal setup for the street/track.

That cams a monster and just a bit bigger than the one I bought.

Mine runs 239/242 @ 0.050 on 111 LSA with 0.649" intake and 0.609" exhaust lift. I can't wait to bolt it in and get it running but I want to combine it with a set of CNC ported heads when I fit it.

Alffie,

In NSW we have to get a pink slip every year. Except the first three if a new car.

I personally do not class cam and head changes as serious mods, because they are difficult to detect from the outside.

Now Now Mike,That's a bit below the belt.

But then I thought, oh yeah I raced at Wakefield last Friday and cruised out to Breaky this morning, gotta love a Cobra that is going at least. One day when all these Chev powered things are finally finished, you will have the same satisfied feeling that us underpowered Ford drivers have most of the time.

Can this cam be used on a stock bottom end? What CNC heads would you recommend?

I reckon you would need to notch you pistons for valve clearance with that cam. I think the MS4 I bought is about the limit without having to notch your pistons.

Stiffy, that cam was just a joke, I just plucked numbers from my behind!!

As Mike states, the MS4 that he has ready to install is about the largest you can go (on a stock, unopened LS1), and even it has very limited piston to valve clearance. One decent over-rev or missed shift and the valves will be kissing pistons... It is one bloody great cam though, and sounds awesome at idle in my opinion!

In all seriousness, if you want a nice, streetable grind with the "rock and roll idle", I'd suggest a 232/234, .595 .598 on 112LSA on Comp XER lobes.

So if you were putting on in would you risk the MS4.....

What would the chances be of damaging the pistons???

How much different would the 232/234 CAM be to the above??

Keeping the lift under 0.600 is probably not a bad idea too. I've got a set of dual springs on my motor now in preparation for the big cam but the lift is getting close to even their max before coil bind. I expect to be replacing springs every 20,000Ks or so as they go off under the extra loads.

What did the guys at TSP reckon you should use?

I emailed Jason last week and had no contact.

I called on the weekend and was informed Jason was on leave (nice to know).

The person I spoke to said he would email me something (still waiting) but he did mention the piston thing. I want a Cam/Head package without touching the pistons. IYO what would I expect HP wise for the Cam and heads seperately??

The MS4 has produced some big peak numbers in the state on unopened LS1 motors i.e just a cam change with the stock heads. I've seen Dyno sheets showing 420 RWHP. Combined with a set of CNC ported heads that number jumps to 450RWHP.

It'd probably make even more in a 6.0 motor

The thing is that it is a top end cam and the car may still be spanked off the line by milder camed motors making better torque.

Sounds good though.

Once you've done a cam change it's not unopened anymore. Back when the big "race to the 11's unopened" was happening, the only thing you could do to the motor was change the valve springs....
