Default Reverse Light

I am trying to source a reverse light for the 540 that doesn't look like a tacky after thought. I am looking to try to integrate it into the rear of the car with a modern look. It has to have ADR approval as a reverse light.

Heres the back of car any ideas.

Also trying to find a high brake light to integrate into the boot as well. The light will have to have a similar curve to the boot and clip in from the outside. The latest model Subaru Imprezza Hatch looks as though it could be the one, but this car is so new the dealers have no listing for any of the car in spare parts.

What about designing a licence plate light(s) that double up as reversing lights?

With the 540 I could imagine 2 rectangular short strip lights fitting vertically in that angular recess directly either side of where the licence plate will go...The strip light could have two strips of LEDs or 2 globes each connected to the licence plate light (facing each other) and reversing light (facing to the rear of the car) functions.

An alternative could be a single strip light made the same length as a licence plate sitting horizontally in that angular recess directly under or above where the licence plate will go?

Regards....Paul

A temporary one on a bracket underneath then wire to the turn lights later?

Warren, there was an earlier thread on this topic but it may not suit your needs. There is, however, a nice reversing light that is narrowish and slightly curved from the Subaru Outback wagon. It is a nice looking one and may suit your needs. It is certainly worth a look.

The best looking 3rd brake light Ive seen is on the Nissan 380Z convertible. I think the size and look is perfect.

I must be missing something guys, but how the hell are you going to install that 3rd brake light onto the ass of a Cobra. "Please Explain".

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Paul
The difficult part is trying to find a lamp that will fit and is ADR compliant. The angle around the number is about 45 degrees so it might to much of angle to be allowable.

Merv
I have seen the Subaru lights and thought they look pretty good. I would rather have only one light, the shape of this light would need 2. These lights are on my maybe list if I decide to use 2.

Mando,
To fit the 3rd brake light in boot I would form a recess (along the shadow line on the boot in the picture above) and find a light that has approx the same curve as the boot. Subaru Imprezza, Holden Vectra, Mazda 3 and Mitsubishi 380 all have lights that suit. The Holden and Subaru light clip in from the outside which is preferable.

Tenrocca
Have had this thought about a temp reverse light for rego, but the vehicle needs to painted for rego, so if I decide on a light that needs to have a recess cut into the panel it needs to done before it is painted.

I can use a Hella 3rd stop like on the AC Cobras, but I am trying to find something that is more with modern era of the vehicle.

Hella make a clear LED light the same as the red LED 3rd stop light which would work well for a reverse light, but the clear light has no ADR approval.

The vehicle has to be painted for rego ? Who told you this ? My vehicle was bare gellcoat with visible seams and flaws and nobody questioned it. Use a bodgey aftermarket unit to pass and then build a slick one that does the same job. Look up www.osnium.com they have som pretty good looking stuff.

The windscreen is attached using sikaflex into the windscreen frame like modern cars and the clear perspex headlight covers uses epoxy to glue them in. Both jobs are best done after painting.

This is from a Concept Cobra on the net Called the X Racer, you can see the reverse lights below the boot line

Did you find something?
I'm integrating a Narva LED into my rear end.
Have a look at www.narva.com.au, go to LED truck and trailer link then part # 90810 on pge 302 of the calalogue (sorry site wont let me link it)
The pick shows a black surround but this is only the rubber surround/seal which you could delete if fixing the thing from the inside as it's made to face fix.

Greg,
Still looking for a suitable light. The Narva one is not ADR 1/00 which is an approved ADR reversing light. The 90810 is a marker light which is ADR 49/00. I spoke to the engineer about these lights and as I thought they would not be suitable for a reversing light.

If want to know (or be confused) about ADR's go to this site http://rvcs-prodweb.dot.gov.au/ and click on Australian Design Rules.

notice the 3rd brake light in boot spoilers on some cars fit in from the outside and look like they may fit the curve on a cobra.

That thing only made the drawing table. Cool but probably wouldn't meet specs.

Roger I had a look at the rear of the mini, but couldn't see where the reverse light is.

Paul I have looked at every car you could imagine looking for a stop light , but most would be hard to fit, the wrong curve or too long. The new Mazda MX5 has a light that looks like it would fit. There is only one in Australia at the Mazda warehouse in Melbourne and is over $400 dollars. A bit too expensive to buy and find out it dosn't fit.
Did you get those photos I emailed you?
