Meatballs / Rondels / Decals
What do people think about decals and what are the legalities or restrictions on road cars in Australian states? I've seen photos of a few Aussie cars with numbers (Stef's comes to mind) and I quite like it, but something tells me the fun police won't like it. Decals can be removed, leaving just the circular meatball - would that be ok on the street?
I found a number of decal kits for around $200 USD on this site. I've included a picture below.

I am not sure but I thought I read somewhere that it was illegal to have racing numbers displayed on a car when being used on the street?

lol, I don't see the logic in that ?
Where did you hear that and what state, city do you live in ?
But, we're talking Government here I guess. I know Nebraska does not have that law.

We're talking Australia here, as mentioned in the first line of this topic.

I'm hoping they're ok
Will be able to provide a worked example on the view of stickers following my visit to the Traffic Management Unit this week (!).

Just as Boxhead said, numbers are a no no in S.A. I dont know what the rules are for other states. I really cant understand the reasoning behind such a rule especially if Gumballs and stripes are OK.
Regards.

Hi,
'Racing numbers' were deemed illegal in NSW. The only exception were road rally events where public roads, in whole or part, were used but once the event was over the numbers had to be removed or obscured by placing race tape across them.
I would assume (?) that this a nationwide policy, maybe to prevent the illegal street racers from displaying numbers.
Cheers

Have not removed numbers, 289 (see photo gallery), from last years
's Nationals for both the look and the relative number to my type of car. Was unfortunate to be pulled over by NSW Highway Patrol doing supposedly 13kph over limit . He didn't say a thing about the numbers. Fortunately remembered the first rule, switch off so he can't hear the exhaust. Have been passed and alongside various police and always get the thumbs up. Suppose it depends on which side of the bed they fell out of that day

I had never checked the legality, but had also 'heard' it was illegal to display race no's. I had them for many years and during the first couple had obscured them with a single strip of 2" race tape.
I got sick of explaining to all who asked 'what's the tape for mate?'
My main concern was not constable plod, but more so not giving the insurance company an out if I did bend it on the street.

Aren't there some sort of "static cling" decals that just peel off ? You probably would have to store them flat. If they were rolled up they would probably curl and blow off.

There are plenty of Commodore and Falcon business vehicles getting around in full race livery, driven daily by the franchise owner or manager.
Pirtek and Enzed were a couple here locally.

Had my visit with the Traffic Management Unit this morning.
Victoria's finest spent a bit under an hour looking over (and under and inside and ... watch those sidepipes they're hot...) my car and taking lots of (digital) photos, they were clearly concerned about several areas on the car however they seemed utterly disinterested in the meatballs/numbers/stickers.
I did not remember to ask about their view on these items until after I got into work (and re-read the thread).

Decals
I've been wearing the warpaint for the last 4.5 years and know one has said anything. Been stopped at booze bus several times and no comments only thanks from cop when told to watch legs on hot pipes.

cheers,
Bryan
