I am somewhat worried about the longer term impact on my alternator. They can be alternator killers. It is at the auto-electrician's now being re-wired-altho' that is nothing to do with the Gilmer set up, I am advised.

I found a specialist workshop in manufacture of aluminium autoparts, with all the latest laser gear at Yandina - fifteen minutes from where I live. He will make up some billet ally pulleys for about $180 for us. He does fantastic work on suspensions systems, conrods, etc., and has done Cobra pulley systems before.

And no freight from the US!

Default Alt Bracket

I know it has been said before and I am sure it will be said again - your engine bay is one of the best I've ever seen. Wow!! And well done.

This image shows what I am looking for:

It looks like you have then fabricated a bracket that fits to your LHS head and connects to the alternator pivot. I think I can just see the bracket here:

Did you try turning the Summit bracket over. I guess the holes would line up but the image on the Summit site looked like there were recessed holes for the bolts and that might cause a problem.

Cheers

Geof

Default Gilmer belt concerns and proper tension

I did change my water pump to standard rotation, and fitted a Gilmer set up. This works fine but I am worried about the longer term impact of that on the alternator bearings and its balance.

Hi Merv,

Could you elaborate on your Gilmer belt concerns a little bit? Am running a new Gilmer belt setup and am already experiencing problems w/ the alternator -- have what looks like a carbon buildup on a frame rail near the alternator (brush material?) and the bearings are going (all within 500 miles). Tension? Would like to know how much tension is appropriate -- seems like the belt either flaps madly or is too tight.

Thanks, Dave

I think that you have it Dave. I am no mechanic but I am advised that belt tightness is the key. Certainly not as tight as a conventional fan belt. These Gilmer drives create such traction that they can put stress on the alternator and its mounts. Also, if they (the Gilmer setup) are of poor quality they may not have been properly balanced and the bolt holes to the waterpump and crank maynot even be centred (some of mine weren't). Others can advise more.

There are several guides on this on the 'net, but be aware that the belt tightens as it warms up. The pressure on the front and rear bearings on 2G alternators are considerable, but maybe less with 3G/similar ones. I had a wiring burnout but this may have been due to another source. The brushes were also worn. I am getting some ally pulleys made and balanced. Will misss that noise, however! (but not the burning alternator smell).

Hope this helps,

Merv

Geof, your right, the bracket did have recessed bolt holes so it could only go one way.
Merv, hopefully the finished product will look as good as his pictures. You said you will miss the noise. Do Gilmer Pulleys sound different to normal pulleys?

Regards.

Yeah! That is the main reason for them IMHO. They sound like a surrogate supercharger!

I have my new pulleys - laser measured and made from billet ally by Yandina metal fabricators.

Quite pleased.

Merc

Can you post the contact and contact details at Yandina.

I'm not ready yet but have thought about some work on pulleys to add to the bling.

Conatct details can go into the memory bank then.

Cheers

Steve

I am ready but they aren't! Still 3 weeks. Car is running fine and looks good and sounds better. Have had a visitor from Dunedin who races in Invercargill in his Nissan Silvia. He is thinking Cobra now ...

I still need to get the correct Gates V belt tomorrow - a 1105mm/6pk and all should be sweet and the alternator less stressed. The holes in the side of the crank pulley may have a whistle, however (wannabe turbo!).

All done. Sound really much nicer than the Gilmer.
