Wow! I am surprised that ultra hi temp caliper paint oxidised like that, but you painted it on the rotors? Seems fine on calipers and I know of a few guys who have used it on their wheels. Would the wheels get that hot? I guess racing can produce some strange outcomes.

I LIKE the paint on my wheels, I've had them THREE different colors over the years. It's nice to be able to change things up once in awhile. Powder coating, your done, it's over!
I DON'T like the paint on my wheels, I've had them... (see above).
The thing is, the paint seems to need touching up to often, it do get old. I've thought about just getting the powder coat and be done with it. But then I worry about, what if the powder coat needs touching up? THEN whaddya do?

Excaliber you burn it off sandblast and start afresh, that's what I've just done.
Mando I didn't know there was a clear powder coat available. Were you given any advice regarding UV stability and longevity on the spinners like that?
You've just highlighted that I'll need to get my spinners done too and I'll get them polished like my plenum but a clear coat would help stop anodising I'm guessing.

Sorry Steve, pics of the centres didnt turn out in my first posting, just fixed that problem, dont know what I did wrong. I posted the pics of the spinners for Leeroy. There polished s/steel, no coating.

They look great Mando.
I liked the raw blasted finish on mine when I first rebuilt them.
I sprayed them black as I was worried about the dirt and dust sticking to the un-coated finish. They look quite good contrasting the stainless bolts and polished spinners.
Easy enough to change back If I decide I need a change.

I went to a heat treaters Excalibur, I'm guessing 400 Celsius plus overnight in their furnace.

I like that black with the chrome look.
Ouch, off to the heaters place. Maybe I'll stay with paint. I just bought a second set of wheels and haven't decided what to do with them yet. Perhaps powder coat one set, leave paint on the other. Clear looks great, black looks great, it's a tough call.
What didn't work for me. I painted the wheels red to match the car, looked HORRIBLE! Might work for some, didn't work for me.

The trick is obviously to use cast centres of good cast quality ie less preparation needed before spraying else a very dark colour like black.
I wasn't sure what the effect would be of blasting the alloy centres and even minor rework was likely to be cost prohibitive hence the PC finish.
Mine will be similar to Mike's with some sparkle in the Onyx black though a tad greyer in finish and nice new surround chrome work.
Just need a car to go with the wheels!!

Hi Mike, I like the look of your rims without the bolt holes. It was that pic that made me have the centre of the pin drive milled out for that race look.

I like the clear coat over the sand blasted centers, hope you don't mind but I will do the same to mine.
Very smart idea you came up with for the knock on spinner look, nice spinners who's were those. Does that say Aust. made on them?

Food for thought -
Talked with my PC man and he said the heat needed to cure off the clear coat in PC finish would see the sheen tarnish slightly off a polished surface compared with a painted clear finish coat.
Need to talk with my polisher and see what he suggests.

Hi Leigh, they are Australian Made and until I machined slots into the arms to flatten them were beautifully finished stainless steel. At least the rears have'nt been touched. I got them through Don at Snakebite about 5 years ago.

I reckon you could weld up those slots on the side and with a bit of linishing and polishing you would never know. Stainless is pretty easy to weld with a TIG. Even thick sections like that because it retains the heat.

nah I'm limited to wet and dry polishing the boat hull, I can't make too much of a bodge of that.
And even if I did it's not the end of the world.
Wax on wipe off...isn't that what they said at the HP factory the other night?

POR15 clear coat
Thanks for all the advise on wheels coatings.
I finally went for POR15 which have a mag wheel clear which is 2 part and very easy to use. Takes around 4 days to harden but comes up nicely. 1st coat I sprayed on which went on nicely but as I'm not much of a spray painter the normal runs appeared. As this stuff take so long to touch dry it tends to self level so your crappy spray job ends out nicely. This gave me the idea to brush on a 2nd coat as the raw metal surface is porous and soaked up 1st coat.
Overall and easy product to use, comes in kit form with all you need ($75) and I'm happy with the result.
