Default Clutch cable pully

My clutch cable broke where it rides on the pulley before going through the firewall. I noticed that my pulley is about 1 1/2 in Dia. The angle seems severe and I know the quadrants in use now are about 3". The car was built in 2001. The area looks tight and a new quadrant would not line up properly. I replaced the whole clutch cable from Ford Racing and I'm sure I can get another 5000 miles out of it or more. It was never greased where it rides the pulley so I did apply some, and I believe it will help. Did anyone else have this problem, and a fix?

I started with the cable route but didn't like the feel or idea of a stranded run with a broken cable. I put in a Hydrolic setup and couldn't be happier! Approx $160 and no worries!

8 years of driving on my clutch cable. Maybe I should check it. Jim

Several of us have added a modified Mustang quadrant to the top of the pedal assembly with good results. I was breaking cables every 2500 miles, but now have 10,000 on one with no problems. Search for a thread titled "Clutch cable" in this section, and you'll get the discussion there.

Good luck!

Alan

AARRRGG. I looked closer at the area of the pulley. Its housed in a Bubble that is bolted to the top of the footbox. This is under the fender behind the brake master cylinder. There is no room to get to the outward bolds on the backside of the fiberglass bubble, I can't even see them. A quadrant looks like it would not fit in the bubble, plus the axis of the pulley would have to be changed and therefore the bubble would not reattach to the footbox. I have not really thought about this but from my first look I'm a little frustrated at the layout.

Default Quadrant Modification

Lou, I will not argue this method vs. the hydraulic method, but I will give you the detail of how I did mine if you want. Send me an email and we can talk on it more. I loaded more pictures so you can see some detail. In one picture the cover is just setting behind and not bolted on yet.

Wayne

Wayne and Alan. I did what you guys suggested. I bought a Steeda quadrant and did some cutting, grinding and burring, to massage it into the pivot sleeve and weld area. I pinned it with one screw. I had to elongate the cutout in the fiberglass. A little back breaking work underneath the steering column but it looks and feels great. That was the one achilles heel on my car. It cost me a car show and a slow ride home in 2nd gear on Rt1 in July!!! I feel alot better now. Thanks again fellas.
