Water Pump Identification
So I'm trying to move my alternator because it hits the frame before the belt is tight. I saw a post suggesting I try the SME-2002 and it looked great. Unfortunately I have a different water pump. Anyone know what I've got? The only numbers I can see on it are "PH-288 A 07". Better yet, what alternator braket I can use with it?

Looks like you have what you need. Rotate the alternator up 180* on the large mounting bolt, then remove your current bottom rod and attach it to the top bolt on the triangular mount into the water pump. Make sure your bolt is long enough. Re attach adjusting rod to alternator. I use a 7440xl belt. Best picture I have right now.

There is a bracket that bolts to the head which will move the pivot point for the alternator inboard by 3". I have a cast iron one from a '70 Ford truck. Part # DOOE-10A336. The brackets for the passenger cars are aluminum. They are very common and you shouldn't have any trouble finding one. You can have this one if you want.

I used a spacer made from 7/8" round bar stock and 7/16" stud along with the adjusting bar. Nice clean installation. This is using the early waterpump without a backing plate, similar to that posted in the inital picture.

So I'm trying to flip the alternator over and it looks like its going to work. One problem, the oil dipstick is in the way. Did you guys just bend it out of the way, or is there a different way to move it? Thanks for the info guys!

Look above at the engine, the dip stick tube is visible below the alternator housing in the picture. It comes up near the back and just inside of the alternator, towards the engine center line. Not all the tubes are the se.

That worked. I think I'm going to need a bigger belt now. The alternator hits the engine before it rotates all the way in now. Looks like I'll still have a little over an inch of movement to tighten with if I can find the right belt.

Ha! Yes getting a shorter belt would have probably let me keep the alternator down where it was. I'll have to see which position gives me more adjustment room and still maintains clearance with the frame.
