Default Frame alignment

Today, I wen to drop my 302 engine in, using the engine mounts provided by B&B, and the frame mounts that they welded to the frame for me. Even with some "more than gentle" pursuasion, I am not able to get the second bolt in after putting the first bbolt in. I have tried the right side first and also the left side first. Either way, it will not line up. It seems to me with the quality of these things, this should just drop right in. Am I missing something here? Has anyone else run into this? Anther issue that I am running into is that it seems as though my steering colum is not going to clear the foot box. I am really starting to panic.

OhBuoy

Did you leave the mounts that go on the engine loose? Give that a try.

Jeff,

No, I have not tried that yet. Somebody else mentioned that as well, so I am going to give it a short tommorow!

Thanks alot, you guys on these forums make this much easier on novices like me. I hope one day I am able to give as many tips.

Tom

I had the same problem trying to get my 351w to bolt in. Loosen the motor mounts then bolts slid right in. Had no trouble with the steering column. Jim

I had the same problem with my 351W. The mounts were off by about 1/4". We ended up cutting the 1/4" off one mount and using the part we cut off on the other end of the mount (hope that makes sense).

Bryan, maybe you could check the jig!

Thats why you never weld the mount in first, if any one from this point on wants NOT to run into this problem you should install the whole mount assy on the engine lower the engine on the frame attach your headers and side pipes aline it all then some how either by welding or clamping secure the mounts. Then pull the bolts and remove the engine. Then do the final weld or what ever means you are using to secure the mounts.

The motor mounts that attach to the block are two different size. The difference is approximately quarter inch from the left to the right. You have to look really close to see the difference. I don't remember the specific details, however I got the manufactures name and part numbers from Barry. They were not a normally stocked item at my local parts shop, they had them at a local warehouse. You don't need to do any fabraication or cut the frame mounts. Ask them (Barry or Bryan) for new parts or part number.
Also, the mounts will fit a 289, 302 and 351. I've done all three.
Don't Panic.....
