T5 Speedo drive gear
My speedo cable got into a fight with the exhaust header and it lost!
It did get it's pound of flesh, however, as it broke and froze, it destroyed the speedo drive gear inside the T5 WC. You can not remove the T5 tail housing while the tranny is still installed! Anyway after almost a day of work, I have a new speedo drive gear an will put the interior back tomorrow. BTW, if you drive your Cobra, they get very dirty. Oh well what will be, will be.
PS Is anyone else posting or working on thire cars here?

In answer to your question, I am building my car.
On your speedo cable I understand there are two lengths, an 83" and a 60". I was sent the 83" with my kit. It appears to be way to long. I am debating to just buy a 60" but am not sure of the best routing for either. I have heard the 60" is a little short. How did you run yours. Any problems you encountered? Detail please!
Thanks for your postings. It helps!

Wayne,
I had the speedo cable made by a speedometer shop. It is 68" long. It is still a little too long but way better than the 72" B&B supplies. My cable came loose from the mounting strap I used and got tangled up with the exhust header. The header won, but the cable froze and broke the clip that holds the drive gear inside the tramsmission. The cable will not come loose now! I put the extra slcak towards the rear instead of to the front.
I am using a 7 tooth drive gear and a 21 tooth driven gear on the cable.
I have 3.73 gears in the Ford 9" diff. The Faria speedo is 1 mile off at 50 mph and 3 off at 75 mph according the my Garmin. The speedometer shop charged me $44.00 for the vastly superior cable. I think the drive gears are $15 bucks and if you have your trams out, you may want to change to a 7 or better a 6 tooth drive gear (T5 type trans). If you have a numerically high number diff you won't be able to correct the mechanical speedo with and 8 tooth installed.

BTW, if you decide to have a cable made, I don't think I would go with a 60", but certainly a 64" may be just fine.

I measured mine again and it is 83". I guess I will junk it and buy another one. Where did you route the cable out of the foot box?
I am running a 7 tooth drive gear, an 18 tooth driven gear, with a 3.50 rear axle. Thanks.

I got the cable made at Metro Speedometer,
1028 E 23rd St,
Independence, MO
816-478-0116
They made the cable while I waited. It is far superior to the B&B supplied one.
BTW, I was off a little on the cost it was $48.00 not $44.00 as I previously stated.

Wayne here is a pic of mine.
It is very straight and gentle bends. I put the excess toward the rear down by the tranny. Instead of up front. There is more room at the back and not so dangerous parts!
BTW, a 7 tooth drive gear and a 17 tooth driven gear will probably be off. I am going to guess a 20 tooth driven gear will be closer. Unless you have huge tires, than go with one tooth less.

ebiggs1, is that the masurement I should give to a speedo shop, 64inches?
I am not sure where what they include in the measurement. I also have Faria gauges.
your photobucket picture is missing above, can you point me to a copy of it?
Thanks, Jim

I checked my Photobucket page and the pic is no longer there. My old brain does not remember what it was of. If you tell me I will certainly get one to you.
The lenght of the cable is not critical. This is evident in the one B&B supplies with the kit as it is way too long. If you have a speedo shop tell them 64" and put the correct ends on.

If you have a T5 you know that clamp can not be put on afterwards.

There is a clamp that holds the cable to the transmission. It is a captured clamp meaning it is part of the cable. It is held on with a 7/16th bolt. If it is not needed it can be cut off but would be impossible to put back on.

Well I got the new cable but it only goes into the speedometer about half way. Just short of far enough to thread the retaining nut. They say I can bring it back in but it is a long drive away. Anyone ever had that problem?
Thanks, Jim

Did you have the shop make it exactly like the stock one? If you did, you better fool around with it a bit because they can be obstinate sometimes.

I tokk the cable back in, and they said the tip was not compressed or sweged completely so it did not have the correct shape to go all the way in.
I hope to install it tonight
