You're right Dave, does seem like yesterday, in '67 I was 19, worked a day job at our Chevrolet Dealership, went home changed and went to the Keck's garage and worked on the Cobra and Z28, mostly 5 nights a week, sometimes til midnight. Loaded the Cobra on the trailer Friday night so we could leave early Saturday morning. We were in Hellertown, Pa. and raced at Watkins Glen, Limerock, Thompson, Marlboro, Cumberlin, VIR, Reading, plus on the off weekend we raced PHA.We had a blast, never thought a thing about what we were doing and never looked back until it was over. Those WERE the days for me.

Lau, you ARE an old phart. (I was only 18 in 1967. )

I was going to school in Ithaca, and was over at the Glen whenever I could make it.

Life sure was simpler then.

Dave, YES I am, and glad to be, How many people today can say they were part of a Cobra Race Team from back in the 60's......and life was simpler then, we kinda did things and then asked questions.....Here's a story for you, '68 or '69, Z28 and Cobra at Reading Road races, Penna. Went to quailfy Z28 and got hit , spun and wrecked. No time for the Cobra. AP,BP,AS and BS was our group, since we didn't quailfy, Scca rules stated we were to start at the back of our class, 2/ 904s, a couple Corvettes no problem. When we rolled it up to the false grid, SCCA put us back of the pack, last car on the grid. last. Well if you knew Hal, he explained what happened and they told us this is the way they understood the rules. Next thing we saw Hal walk up to the two 904 drivers and point his finger at the officials and walked back to the Cobra to suit up, What did you tell them Hal. To get out of my way, I'm going to pass them before the first turn. Green Flag, 4 wheel drift off the course and passed everyone by turn one. 17 or 18 lap race, 3 laps into the race we got Black Flagged for going off the course for the purpose to gain position. 8 Sec. in pit lane and guess what, YES, we won the race........Where can you see that today????? I have a picture our our team race shirts in my photo gallery, just can't place in post.....must be part of being old......

SS Cobra .... you brought back some memories there . I raced SCCA starting back in the mid 60`s and ran some of the same tracks you mentioned . Reading ( Blue Mountain Region ) , Marlboro ( have a ton of pictures from there and was there when the Howmet turbine car ran ) , VIR , Road Atlanta ( 1970 ) , Summit Point and Pocono . I was probably at some of those tracks when you guys were . Art Bartholomee and Ron Grable were my two Driving school instructors at Marlboro .
I remember seeing one of the E/P Porsches lose it in a turn at Reading where the track went through the barracks area and wrap itself around a telephone pole . I also remember that the front straight was part of one of the runways and we were told that if we got a red flag while on it , pull off and stop as there might be a plane landing ! Small world isn`t it ?
I remember seeing Hal Keck run ... I`ll see if I have any pictures of him . I ran E/P ( Porsche ) and finally got disgusted with SCCA , so I went dirt track racing !

Bobcat, Yes, Reading was an interesting track. What name did you register the Porsche under or what number? I have several race programs from the different tracks, I know I have a couple from Reading. Most of the photos I took when we had time were 35mm Slides, Ron helped post them in my photo gallery. Any pictures you have and would like to share, please send them to me..

Back in the day

Lovehamr, Thanks, Yes, the last photo was at Watkins Glen, late 60's, coming out of the Chacane and starting down the back straight, a Mustang had pulled part way off the course and the driver got out of his car and we tried to miss him......we didn't.....George Taylor was driving during the "500" at the Glen. The car ended up on the bank of the rear track entrance tunnel. George was Okay. Wr rebuilt the Cobra...
