Serpent Express experience

I have one and just love it. Trailers great, loads easily and is quite functional. I also modified it to be able to put either my Cobra or the Goldwing on it.

I bought my Serpent Express Trailer from Larry in April of 2005 and couldn't be any more pleased with it. You don't even know it's behind the truck unless you look in your rear view mirror.

I've had mine since 05 and have put about ten thousand miles on it. A nicely put together unit. I tow with an 04 Ranger V6 and my total package with the car loaded is about 4500 lbs. Never had a problem and it tows very nicely. The only thing I would do different is get aluminum ramps. They weren't available when I got mine but I'm going to upgrade.
Larry Johnson is easy to work with if you're going to order new.
A great alternative to a full size trailer if you don't have a large pickup to pull the heavier full up trailers. No problem maintaining highway speeds. Could use an extra 50 hp when pulling up long steep grades (but who couldn't) but as long as I don't have to slow down for someone in front of me can maintain 70 going up.

Mine is great. Like they said, tows relaly well. I was using a 18' all steel flat bed. The SE actually actually tows better!

I added some options to mine that I think are worthwhile:
1. E-track for the front tires.
2. LED lights - rear visibility at night is a good thing
3. Extra doors. That front door is extremly valuable. Don't buy one without it.
4. Extra roof bracing. It snows here.
5. Alum floor. Muche easier to clean when you spring an oil leak at the track.



If would make a few small improvements, though.

1. Make the stripes out of a reflective material, so the back can be seen better at night.
2. Use a bull dog hitch. You don't really need the strength, but it's easier to use.
3. Use a flip down tongue jack. The crank type sticks up too far, and hits the tail gate. I changed this and am very happy with it.
4. Add another door by the right rear tire.

"I don't know if you'll recognize my name, but I own #23 SE trailer. I bought it from Charlie in MA and it now resides in Northern VA. I just wanted to write to let you know that if people question the strength of the cover than they should check with me.

Due to a very busy schedule this fall, I was unable to put the trailer inside our storage barn for the winter as is the plan. Well, the timing could not have been worse this year as Northern VA has set a record for snow fall in one season. We have endured 2 major storms with the trailer outside. The last one, a few weeks ago, dumped 34" of fairly wet snow on top of my beloved trailer. I'm sure that the double roof beams helped a bit, but thankfully there was absolutely no effect on the Serpent Express trailer. Thank you. I was a bit worried but all was okay. "

I have seen the SE in person and spoke to Larry before buying my trailer. I was impressed with both him and the SE. However, when all was said and done, I got a nice new 18' car hauler package for less money than what I was wanting in the SE.

IMHO, I think that the car hauler likely has a better resale and will last better than the fabric hood. Also, I did not like the idea of fooling with the zippers for tie-down access up front, etc. I can carry a bunch more stuff in mine, as well, and the protection is better.

That said, if the SE fits your needs, I think it is a good and quality built unit... just was not the right thing for me. Good luck with the decision.
