Default Tits on pipes

I knew that would get you!
I'm in the middle of a unintended engin rebuild. There are small welded V shaped pieces welded on top and bottom on my side pipes. Now I know why the side of my car is chipped. Does anyone know if they need to be there or if they serve a purpose?
I have an early Backdraft #178 and it's all supposed to be original. I don't see any reason that I can't grind them off.Does anyone know why they might be there?
I tried to post a pic but couldn't get it done, new to posting on the forum.
Thanks

I thought about something like that, except they are on both the top and bottom. Needless to say they are what has put the dings in the side of the car. I think i'll cut the top ones off for safety going in, and leave the bottom ones in case I have to rig something up.

They are for the slip joint springs. BDR makes a kit so you can flange the pipes and headers to eliminate the springs.
