Braided radiator hoses/sizes
Hi All, I'm about to replace all the black ruber hoses and lines in my Backdraft to braided stainless items with AN type fittings or "AN look alike Magna Clamps".
I would like to order the radiator hoses and have them here before pulling off the stock ones so the car has as little down time as possible.
Can any of you owners please tell me the inlet and outlet sizes of the stock hoses on the car? The upper is 1 1/2" at the manifold water neck end But what size is it at the stailess steel pipe end?
The lower is 1 3/4 at the water pump end but what is the radiator end size? Would love to confirm these so I can order the hoses and have them here when my new Backdraft #814 arrives from shipping next Monday (6-21).
Also: the lengths would be great if known!
Thanks! Don

That's a pretty negative statement, especially coming from a dealer! Why should you say something like that instead of giving me the sizes and lengths of the hoses (since you are obviously in the position to do that for me).
I have built two Cobras from the tires up and have one now that I built, including the 418 stroker motor that puts out a dyno proven 520+ HP and 550 lbs/ft of torque. None of the hoses in that car leak and I expect that none of these will either.
As a dealer I would expect a bit more encouragement and a lot less worthless comment.

Those clamps inside those purdy fake AN covers would not hold a garden hose. Since you are so open to advice I will stop there. We've only done 130+ of them here, and 2 with those silly covers. Build it your way and I suppose determine the hose sizes as well.
I won't encourage you to install potentially faulty parts, so sorry no encouragement from me.

I replace all those crappy clamps with Comp Cams "Gator" clamps for the small hoses as they can take a lot more torque than the cheap ones that come in the Magna Clamps. For all the radiator hoses or higher pressure items I modify the AN look housings so I can use them with stainless steel "T-clamps" and cut the T-clamps to the correct needed length with a die grinder or Dremmel & cut-off wheel. That way I get the look I want plus the clamp power I need, not the crappy/weak holding of the worm gear type clamps.
Thanks!

I agree. So sorry to cause an apparent "flap" over what started as a simple question about hose sizes. It was/is certainly not my intention to get into a "pissing contest" with another member, and I hope Cashburn feels the same way.
We're all on the same team here with the same interests in these cars, and it's all about having some fun out there. Life is too short for needless conflicts and sweating the small stuff.
I will simply try out what I want to do and if there are problems then I'll go back to the OEM stuff as/if needed.
It never hurts I feel to try to make your car "your" car and I did not see that as an offense to the original set-ups or anyone who sells them. I'm sorry if someone else thinks what I want on my car is "silly", but everyone to their own taste I guess.
I'll consider the topic closed and hope no one else out there got offended by my asking a question (which I thought at the time was simply that).

In the interest of scientific curiosity.... I thought those braided hoses and clamps were burst proof and stronger/more durable than rubber hoses... any contradictory info based on personal experience is appreciated and I would welcome the info as I am considering the upgrade. Thanks.

Don,
I'd suggest starting a new thread with a new title. There must be someone with a Backdraft and a ruler out there in Cobraland.
You must be having one heck of a good time now that you are settled in Hawaii AND have 2 Cobras! We miss you back here.
