The previous owner of the car I purchased was all set to relocate his car from VA to SoCal. He did some exhaustive research and received a number of quotes from different companies. Here is who he chose to go with...
http://www.cslautotransport.com/
I'm just glad I could arrange it so he didn't have to use them..
Here's his thread on CACC:

Good luck,
- Allen.

I've used FedEx as well. You can get a binding quote on line, which is nice. They are not the cheapest, but remember, you get what you pay for....

Rich's Classic Transport has been good to us and I know several others here have used him.

Intercity is a first class transporter with the rigs to prove it. They aren't the cheapest but after alll do you really want the cheapest.
Their place of business is only roughly 10 miles from my house, when I go by and they have a rig there it is being cleaned and prepped.

Somebody around here (one of the regulars) had the guy run off with his money. We haven't had an update on that in a while, and I can't remember who it was... but the trucker was out of North Carolina, I believe.

FWIW I occasionally watch Wayne Carini's TV show "Chasing Classic Cars" and he seems to always use Intercity.

I've also heard good things about Intercity from friends who have shipped cars. Their shipping rates always seem to be reasonable too.
I thought Rich's Transport stopped doing business some time ago when the economy went south.

WPA Cobra,
I used a company called, Excellence Auto Carriers. The guys name is Jim McGregor. I am VERY particular when it comes to moving my vehicles and was super impressed with his personality, up to date carrier, an his caring of the vehicles. Check out the website, exellenceautocarriers.com

Intercity moves lots of very nice cars. When they picked mine up there was a Mercedes 300SL gullwing on the same truck. On the way back was a 30s classic (Packard?) that he had just dropped off.
One of the things I did run into was scheduling. It took three weeks to get the pickup and two for the return. I'm in Colorado so it takes longer to get a full van and they don't have a timeout that schedules it. Their drivers were friendly, and on the return he wiped the car down with Maguiars before he did the "inventory".
I've also heard good things about FedEx from others.

The last time I got a quote Intercity's web page had a pitch from Jay Leno.

Precious Metals is another great operation. Reliable is pretty good, I just have had scheduling issues with them. Always ask if they own the trucks, if they are a broker forget it, hang up, move on...

For Intercity the drivers own their own tractors but the trailers are Intercity's.

I found a shipper on http://www.transportreviews.com/ that was near where I lived with good ratings. The only problem is they get posted on a brokerage shipping board and you really don't know who you will get. Maybe I was lucky, but my guy Mike was great. It was not a solid wall enclosed trailer, but it had canvas sides. I had my cover and the shipper had a tyvek cover over it. I drove it on and off the trailer with a lot of help. It cost about $1,500 from Florida to Washington last March. My driver was all over the country and you could probably save $300 if you called him directly. Message me if you want his phone number.

Those were the days! Prices like that are hard to get from the top firms.
Where is your car going from and to?
